Agreed. The 4XXX series looks like it'll be a monster in the high end. New architecture and absolutely outrageous clocks.

40sTheme and ghost recon88:

I propose a gentleman's wager:

I'll bet you each $25 the single 4870 core product does not defeat the 9800GX2 at Crysis, at 19X12.

Whatever you like to drink, this should cover a glass of it, so a friendly wager for a shot of the good stuff?

(BTW- I hope you're right- a single 4870 smacking down the 9800GX2 would be a huge leap forward, I just don't think it's going to happen)

If you live in Michigan, I'll buy you a beer if you are right. I could see the 4870 beating the 9800GX2, but it could be slower too. Either way, I expect it to be around the performance of a 9800GX2, but without the crossfire issues.

sorry, but the 4870 isn't going to beat the 9800gx2. I'll be happy if the 4870 beats the 8800 ultra.

We'll see. It is only a couple of months away before we find out how it does.

If it indeed bests the 9800GX2, I just might get back into PC gaming... a little

Hmm that would cover almost a case of Monster Khaos now

Too bad there aren't any games I'm interested in playing that would take advantage of these cards. The industry is so boring with all the FPS.

4870 is supposed to be released at around 9800gtx prices iirc...that should tell us something, no?

Are all of those some sort of strategic war games? I'm not too interested in that either. I found Age of Empires 1 and 2 passable years ago, but don't have much of an appetite for excessive virtual violence.

If you aren't interested in FPS or RTS games, then what are you interested in? Only thing really left is RPGs. Fallout 3 is coming later this year, so that is something to look forward to.

Well according to rumours this round should be pretty good for AMD:

GT200 is slightly less than 9800 GX2 on single chip, but still GT200's power consumption will be over 50W larger than 9800 GX2's (GX2's TDP is less than 200W, GT200's rumoured TDP is 250W)..basically meaning that Nvidia will go backwards with their power consumption efficiency. When HD4870 is basically HD3870 X2 on single chip, and they have managed to drop powerconsumption by over 50W. And AMD have pushed that efficiency even further with HD4870 X2; two HD4870's would have 300W TDP, but this X2 card will have 250W TDP value..so they have gained 50W smaller power consumption by just decreasing memory clock frequencies slightly. Good job. Remembering that HD3870 X2 consumed more than two HD3870-cards.

GT200 will be 85% larger than G92 and will have like 87% more processing units. RV770 will be 30% larger than RV670 and will have 50-100% more processing units. So Nvidia haven't made any progress in their architecture, when AMD has done huge improvements. Both are made with same architecture that these companies used with their predecessors and these new chips don't present us new GPU architecture.
-----

HD4870, despite being slightly less than two HD3870s in one chip will have killer performance; if two HD3870 cards would have 100% efficiency they would still lose in Crysis by like 15% against 9800 GX2, but still HD4870 manages to beat 9800 GX2 by 30%. Perhaps single HD4870 can beat GT200?

If you don't like FPS, and you don't like RTS, get a console.

mostly likely bad rumor. Never happened before..
single card power consumption is always <= dual-card power consumption from last generation.

another bad rumor.
absolutely no proof/way HD4870 will beat 9800GX2 by 30%. or did you mean to say 3870x2?

Actually the 8800gtx used at least as much power or more than the 7950gx2. But then again, it was faster.

That says very little about actual performance. "Processing units" or whatever you call them are not the only factor when it comes to performance. RV770 will probably do really well in 3dmark vantage, but when it comes to games it's unknown.

it doesn't make sense that gt200 would take 50w more than 9800gx2 but not have at least equivalent performance. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that gt200 will have BETTER performance than 9800gx2 if it also consumes more power.

Let's face it, 4870 is going to be designed to go after 9900gts at best. 4870x2 is the one that 9800gtx will need to contend with.

Try Hockey, wait you don't want violence. Try Baseball. It is a blast and it doesn't take almost any athletic ability. (It was always my favorite sport, but I got my scholarship for soccer - which I have no interest in playing anymore.) Golf can be fun if you play enough, but it is frustrating when you first get into it because it is just plain difficult to play correctly.

This is what makes me think it's performance will not be on par with the GX2.

AMD only drop prices when nVidia force them to do so. The HD 3870 dropped nicely in price when the 9600GT came out.

Of course, I'd love to be wrong. A card that is as fast as a GX2 for a 9800GTX price would be nice and I am not holding my breath.

fast as GX2? Probably not. More like little faster than 9800gtx.
