It's great news finally from ATI. I take it getting out early means they got good yield on the part and could even mean faster final speed for it. just one question, what's the expected performance of this part? Any info on that?

I tried searching but was unable to find motherboards based on those 5 chipsets. Got any links to places selling any of them?

interesting... I see that newegg only carries ONE:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813135085

An ECS based on the GeForce 8200 chipset, it doesnt have any with 8100 or 8300 or nforce 720a or 730a.

And I haven't managed to find any reviews of hybrid power in action so I don't know how easy it is to use and activate.

I haven't bothered looking for those specific motherboards before because, quite frankly, AMD is not a serious player ATM in the CPU market. If they sliced the cost of 4x phenom by a LOT (and raised the mhz) then I could take them seriously, but not until then. (that, or release a reasonable x2 processor that competes with wolfdale).

I wonder why there are practically no boards available with those chipsets though. Demand can't be THAT low...

EDIT: I found out that asus lunched a 8300 based board:
http://www.asus.com.tw/product...model=2181&modelmenu=1

And it is not available anywhere...

This is absolutely made for a low power HTPC.

I'm skeptical, since ever since the HD 2900s, AMD has had fantastic specs with far less than impressive performance IMO.

But i'm glad to hear this is coming out soon.

I love seeing new cards all the time

Seems like AMD will finally beat NVIDIA with a SINGLE GPU. I'm looking forward to see what this card has in store for us.

What's the point of offering GDDR5 and GDDR3 when they could've kept it to GDDR4. GDDR5 should be expensive since it's so new...

While that would be wonderful, this is not necessarily the case. Oh sure, it will beat the G92 and G80. But the new G200 is set to arrive at about the same time, and there is no telling which will be faster.

I'm glad this will keep ATi afloat but realistically my next card will probably be a GT200.

my next card is whichever is better, the R700 or G-200... I will wait for reviews to decide.

And I will also weigh in price/performance and the ability to do hybrid power on an intel (ie, turn the video card OFF completely and use the onboard GPU when doing 2D)

Knowledge of past products, release cycles, release tendencies, market knowledge, & accurate guesswork?

Obviously, i'll let BFG answer that himself, but i'm with him.

I look forward to this new series from AMD, but i'm all but certain it will be beaten by nV's next series lineup.

Of that i have no doubt...you can mark these words

It will take more than this to keep AMD afloat...they are in some serious trouble.

Good to see. Too bad it's out of stock but options like Hybrid power are always good since most time is spent at idle anyway. My next motherboard will definitely be one of the Gigabyte ones with Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) tech. I think it was tweaktown that did a review and it showed a tangible decrease in power usage at idle, which I'm all for...heck I even turned on thermal management for the 1st time ever in an effort to keep power usage down.

Is there any specific name for the Intel tech that turns off the discrete GPU? I'd like to read up a bit on it.

Sure AMD's CPU's aren't up to where Intel's 45nm is atm but when considering these 8200 and 780G chipsets, AMD arguably has the best platform for low cost HTPC and thats what people should be considering when purchasing....not the individual CPU's performance (e.g. Phenom/X2+780G > Wolfdale + G35).

According to specs HD4870 should be like HD3870 X2's theoretical performance numbers on single GPU and GT200 should be GT200-30 should be 9800 GX2 on single chip.
At this moment 9800 GX2 eats HD3870 X2 alive in game benchmarks. Even 8800 Ultra wins it

unless they revamp their current inefficient stream shaders, i dont see how the 4k series would be groundbreaking in performance. as long as the shader architecture stays the same, it doesnt matter if it's using GDDR3 or GDDR5. just my 2c.

I paid 15$ extra for one (got ripped off in shipping, didn't notice), calculated it will pay itself off in 7 months... well it would have if the stupid software worked, it crashes all the time and is completely useless.
Don't bother with it.

And while I said I will definitely buy the one that is better. I am with the others in my GUESS that the G200 will outperform the R700. I hope AMD surprised us though.

What specs? So far floating out there all I found are some rumored R770/GT200 specs and neither seem to be well backed (almost every site I check has conflicting information).

Past products? Many have stated that up until the 8800GTX nvidia didn't have the performance crown. I guess the past trend that the card coming out later (850XT vs 6800U, 1800XTX vs 7800GTX, etal) and now that the GT200 will be following up R770, I kind of see that the faster card is released a little after its competitor's could seem logical. However, the ONLY time that I can recall where ATi beat nvidia to the punch on releasing a next gen product was the 9700Pro. And we know how that turned out for nvidia.

Not everything stays consistent with what's happened in the past; in fact the market is so dynamic that it's hard to really base anything off of history. I still want to hear BFG though, if he has confirmed specs for either product I'd be more than happy to hear them

GT200 for me as well, unless R770 outperforms a 3870x2 by 20-30%. I often run Linux for work on the same box that turns into a Wintendo (or WINE-tendo?) at night. It'll take a lot to make me put up with ATI hardware on Linux again.

This NVIDIA loving without even having seen comparisons of both nVidia's and ATI's new cards is ridiculous. Maybe ATI can provide rocksolid performance at a much lower pricepoint? Haven't they allready said they are aiming for mainstream gamers, and not the utter high-end? Most profit can be made in the 150-250$ range anyways. And perhaps they'll also manage to put out something really high-end, who knows? Maybe they worked out the flaws and actually have a winner here? History tells us that it's very possible, nvidia hasn't always been on top :S

If this new card indeed offers better performance than NVIDIA's 8800 Utlra and 9800GTX and proves better than the GT200 series, it may be my first ATI video card.

RV770 at $300 isnt going to outperform nvidia's $600 gt 200 flagship. 3870x2 and 9800gx2 performance is a good guess for 4870 and gt200 respecitively, however, where does that put 4870x2? If nvidia is forced to come out with an x2 card again then we'll be able to hear bfg's screams from here

Or some of us are running on nforce platforms and will either want to SLI from the get-go or at least have the option open.

Sometimes the simple, non-nefarious explanation is sufficient.
