ATi 5850/5870 review thread

sorry, I had 3 or 4 comments from oc guy mixed in there in which I went back and said that I should have said 36-67 days instead of 30-45.

Does anyone else find it interesting that fuad is the only person with relatively positive nvidia rumors right now? Nvidia has a LOT of agents in the wild and also has many enthusiast sites that are in their pocket. Couldn't they have leaked positive info to one of those guys instead? I would say "don't wait, buy 5xxx now" but since dell has all the cards atm then we may as well sit tight for a few weeks until availability is greater. Maybe by then nvidia will have gotten their act together and be ready to give us something interesting.

Do we know yet if the 58xx series supports AMD Hybrid Graphics?

I've been looking at a number of mid-level 785G boards to replace my Nv570 board. The onboard video of the 785G is more than sufficient for the majority of my computer use, so I'd really be happy if I could toss in a Radeon 5850 and have it either disabled or in a very low power state while I am not gaming.

Also, has the issue of mixed feature set support been solved? Since the onboard video of the 785G is DirectX 10.1 only, I assume that the DirectX 11 functionality in the 5850 would be disabled unless I was in discrete-only grfx mode, right?

Both cards, HD5850 and HD5870, use 27W when idle. I'd say that it's very low anyway. No idea how much the IGP eats though. 10W tops?

Anyway, if you're worried about idle power draw, I'd say you're safe with the new cards. They have extremely low idle power draw. And since the IGP will be deactivated once a discrete card is in, I don't think you'll see a difference in your power bill in the end

Look pal, after thinking every application window you open on your 1080p plasma TV's screen will get another 1080p resolution inside - thereby effectively multiplying it into /dev/nul or whatever - I don't think you have *ANY* relevance or even credibility left when it comes to *ANY* technical subject.

You must be young otherwise you would have heard about all the astroturfer scandals between 2003-2006, mostly triggered by the "strategy" of a giant PoS douchebag called Derek Perez, until recently the head of NV PR arm - IIRC just left Nvidia, now destroying some unlucky sports team's reputation - but hey, it's never too late to do some googling...

FYI I'm a 6'3" 220lbs (maybe more, I just had a giant late lunch ) Eastern European (rather Central) and I spent few years with boxing... normally I'd do this kind of silly thing just for fun but since I'm a dad I cannot really risk putting you on the strecher for weeks or months and going into jail for someone like you...

FYI I'm a 6'3" 220lbs (maybe more, I just had a giant late lunch ) Eastern European (rather Central) and I spent few years with boxing... normally I'd do this kind of silly thing just for fun but since I'm a dad I cannot really risk putting you on the strecher for weeks or months and going into jail for someone like you...

yes, that is quite likely correct. How often we allow ourselves to see bias where none exists, or we are the only ones biased and assume that anybody who doesn't agree with our own viewpoint is the "biased" person.

btw, I will kick anyone's ass if they don't agree with my opinion. Which is constantly changing based upon the current retail climate since I'm no fanboy of either camp.

OTOH this particularly disgusting (even by Perez' standards) astroturf-initiative was well-documented, see my links earlier.

Just read this one: Radeon HD 5870 CrossfireX test review @Guru3D

It's nice to see that under CoD:WaW (DX9) the 5870CF is bottlenecked by the CPU even with a "Core i7 965 @ 3750 MHz (3.6 + Turbo mode)" in Asus X58 ROG mobo....

EDIT: game title corrected (Waw vs MW) + CPU added

You know from that test it seems as if the 5870 is almost twice as fast as the 4890 (which is amazing) at the highest res...damn so many conflicting results...some sites don't show that much performance advantage for the 5870.
