Actually I just looked over the graphs on toms and all I can think of is:

Son... I am disappoint

If the results have any truth in them, the GT300 will destroy that card, since its barely faster than the GTX285

So much hype and this is all they have? I hope Guru 3d, AT and some others show better results tomorrow

Ummm....I just looked through your posts. I wont take the time to copy/paste them, but anyone can view your recent posts and decide for themselves who is here to trash cards.

Now please dont attack personally, it is against ToS.

Im not sure me noticing 5870 is 50% faster than 4870 in FC2 is trashing the card. In fact, that is a nice improvement!

Tom's hardware has been known to be quite pro intel and NV, wait until anandtech has some reviews up or some other sites can back up this data that tom's got.

That is what I am saying. Is it just me or is it barely faster then a 285? In order fr this to be 400 USD it has to be AS fast as a 295. At least the 295's will go down now. Man I was hoping for so much more.

At lower resolutions, this gpu is not that much faster than previous models.. the gap widens when you hit 2650x1600.. by as much as 30 fps vs the 285 and beats the 295 in almost every benchmark at that resolution.

If you don't game at that resolution, then clearly you don't need to upgrade. If you do, this card will outdo a 295 in most instances, according to these graphs.

a single GPU beating a dual GPU card that has 800MB more onboard memory as the resolution INCREASES.. all while consuming LESS POWER?

I fail to see how this is NOT impressive.

The fact remains, the 5870x2 can bring twice the computing resources to bear on some problems. And that may be important for people with more CPU firepower and/or bigger displays.

heheh, I know this doesn't mean much, but just on paper, this below looks ridiculous.

3200 shaders vs. 480 shaders.

I KNOW IT MEANS NOTHING!!!!!!!!! Just funny to look at is all.

Please remember the 295 is a dual GPU solution. Which gets you microstutter, input lag and failure to scale in any game without a profile. While not an issue for a majority of buyers there are some willing to pay more $ for a bit less performance from a single GPU.

There is also ATI's track record of barely functioning drivers at launch which unlock the hardware's potential only around the time it is obsolete.

All a moot point. If the rumors are true there won't be any of these cards to buy until Black Friday, or possibly early next year.

Tomshardware 5870 crossfire review

Looks like 5870 ~ 50% better than 4870 in Far Cry 2, but 2X 5870 is barely faster than my current setup in Crysis.

hrm. Your setup = 2x 280s

2560 8xAA Veryhigh

2 x 5870 = 28 fps

2 x 285s = 16 fps

2 x 280s = ~ 14 fps

28 isn't exactly "barely" faster than 14...

And why would you assume I game on that resolution? What % of people game at that resolution?

Are there actually people who buy cards based off resolutions other than that of which they play?

I am on 1080p. I qualified my post with "my setup" so people knew I wasnt making a general statement about the card.

guys...just ignore OCguy and keysplayer...they are just here to do their worst and try to trash ati cards as much as they can

sorry to do this but this is representative enough:

IMO it's going to be worth waiting for the DX11 cards. The Inquirer hinted today that the new AMD DX11 card will be faster than the NV GT300, and it should be out in a few months or so.

Im also subscribing to this thread so I can quote you on this.

so when is NV GT300 coming out so you "can quote him on this?"

Dadach, my participation in this thread before your post here, was this:

OCguy is discussing the results. Giving his opinion. Some agree with him and some don't.

You come in and trash him and I for no damn reason. You are the problem. Not us.

Personally, I am going to be waiting until I see more reviews before passing judgment.

I have also heard that Tom's is not as reliable as it once was. Although I don't really keep abreast of these things.

Exactly the subject of numerous threads relating to whether to buy a 4870X2 or a GTX280/285.

Well, so far (only Toms to go by at this point) it looks like the 5870 is to 4870x2 as GTX280 was to 9800GX2. We need a lot more reviews though. Like ALL of them. Like now.

I do this. If I know the card does well at a higher resolution than what I play at then I know it will do well enough for my needs.

After reading (and debunking) the CPU-limit article for the HD3850 (AGP), I'm never putting any stock into their reviews again. They are trash and are usually erroneous in some aspect. I've never really trusted Tom's, but that review just put the final nail into the coffin.

But that said, if you compare the 5870 to the 4870X2, then the 5870 looks like a freaking beast. In general it seems to be a tad slower without AA and a tad faster with 8xAA, but of course there are always exceptions pending the game being demonstrated.

you and me and everyone who has read the forums more than once know that it is not what he is doing...you can try to convince people untill you are blue (green?) in the face, but thats the exact reason i quoted that one conversation he had with sickbeast, just so people can see his mindset...carry on...

I am pretty impressed so far. I think the right time to buy will be when the GT300 comes out. I have no idea what the performance will be like, but it might cause the 5870x2 to drop down to $499, which i think is reasonable for hi res gaming. Who knows, maybe even the rumored GT300x2 will make things even more competitive. Despite the headaches, I like dual GPU, and would prefer to have it all on one PCB rather than the dual card setup I have now. It's definitely going to be an interesting few months. Does anayone remember when we thought these might come out last Spring? I might be the only one hehe.

Had these cards been 100$ cheaper they would look to be very competitive. The only thing I notice, particulary on the Crysis benchmarks, is there is minimal performance drops when increasing the AA compared to the Nvidia cards.

However without any further reviews/benchmarks, questionable drivers, a lot of people seem to be jumping to conclusions too early on both sides!

I think if ATI could have made more cards they would have been 100 or at least 50 bucks cheaper. with the earlier 40nm issues and the fact that these cards will be in high demand, ATI would not have come close to meeting demand though. they really had no other choice then to go with the higher prices and lucky for them there is no competing product from Nvidia. I still believe by xmas that the 5870 will be no more than $299 especially if Nvidia has its cards ready by then.

It's funny for me to be so into the possibility of new cards given 90% of what I play is Source based, and Source dodesn't matter much with the new architecture that much at all. It's by far an old, CPU favoring engine that the new Gen of cards doesn't, and doesn't need to, have any major impact. What I need is a Source 2 engine, but what is the time frame for that? I still also would like to see the Crysis games run as smooth as butter at very high DX10 and 1920x1200.
