Jacen, even though those links aren't working for me I do remember you calling the prices on the marketing slides we had access too "outdated".

Here's what you said, even though I think you did make a typo:

You guys are going to crap when you see the 5870 come in well under $300 and the 2GB model come in a bit under $400.

MSRP of course, I can't promise a lack of retailer markups.

The slides we saw put the 5870 at $400. At newegg it's $379, but of course $379 is not well under $300 so I think you might have made a typo in your original post too

Ya I haven't quite figured out how to link to direct posts here, so those are just the pages of my posts =p

Tempted the pull the trigger but I am considering holding out for the 2GB.

The typo was on the slides, I did confirm that later on. They mixed up the 5870 and 5850 and listed the former twice. I assumed they meant the 2GB and 1GB but my contact confirmed it was a typo.

I'd wait for all the reviews to come out. Then, look at how all the cards perform at your res, on your games, with your preferred amount of AA/AF. Also, keep in mind that most users would prefer a slightly slower single gpu card to a multi-gpu card simply because of the hassles associated with crossfire/sli.

Basically even though their slide had a typo on it, there is still good news. That seems to peg the 5850 at $259 and the 5870 at $379

With their, who do you mean?

It sucks that these guys get to break the NDA before more reputable sites get to publish. Ill still give Anand the page-views no matter what though.

I really want to see the 2GB version...

A bit of mixed results on the reviews - some put it closer to the 295 others a bit far away.

The price seems reasonable though, considering it is DX11.

It's available for order at NCIX now...and it seems the Asus version comes with DirT2.

I'm somewhat disappointed that it doesn't wipe the floor with every card but I suppose getting near GTX295 performance for less is pretty good. Ah well...time to wait for GT300 now I suppose...so when is the NDA up on that??!!

The performance is not really that impressive to me. It is nowhere near the speed of the GTX 295 in most games and it won't get close to a setup like GTX 280 SLI. In fact it is not that much faster than a GTX 285 in a number of games. The biggest tale here is how little the performance is improved over the HD 4890. Everything but the bandwidth is doubled so you would expect quite an increase, but that's not the case. The 5870 is only ~50% faster than the 4890 and sometimes even less. That's pretty disappointing for a card that appears to be 2x in just about every way.

Anyway it's a good card for some people, it just doesn't do anything for me. Hopefully GT300 will be more impressive.

It's about $100 cheaper than the GTX 295, which is a good value, but it's not mindblowing in any sense. That's the issue, the 5870 is a good card, but it isn't really going to get anyone excited like RV770 or G80. It's the best card at its pricepoint, but it isn't better or even equal to more expensive parts. It doesn't change the marketplace in any way. nVidia will not have to respond to the 5800 series in any way if it doesn't want to. The only thing they need to do is lower the price of the 285 to $299 or less.

Anyway you have to be a bit concerned about how RV870 will compete with nVidia's next generation part. Of course who knows what GT300 will be like, it could be a flop, but it won't take much to beat RV870. If they improve GTX 285 performance by 50% or so they will easily have the fastest card.

Without DX11 being out there yet this card is going to be a purchase only for people needing to buy RIGHT NOW.

Some of my takeways are that the card is not a significant enough upgrade from the 4890 which has been selling in the recent past for around $130 and can now be considered a value leader, that while idle power is very, very low it can really suck up power if you let it and it is pretty damn loud under stress.

Anyone in the market for a jet engine?

What I don't understand is all the posts I see around the net expecting this card to be 40% better than the 4870X2 or the 295. It's the next generation up from the 4870 and it pretty much doubles it's performance. That seems pretty impressive to me. And all the bitching that it isn't $150, get real or a real job.

Well if you do the math, the gtx295 has a total of 662 fps vs 602 for the 5870. Whats that about 11% faster? The 295 cost 23% more. So the 295 would have to frop about 40$ to to be even. I'd call that close.
