[Sighs].. Why did they include a mini display port instead of HDMI?

I actually don't think prices are bad... $379 for a single GPU that'll run just about every game on the planet at 2560x1600 res with AA, with ability to run the next DirectX that isn't even out yet isn't all that terrible. We certainly are spoiled right now though, $150 - $200 gets you a lot of horsepower.

Though I think the prices aren't bad, I too am waiting for prices to drop before I buy... c'mon Nivida, get that GT300 out already...

For the cost of a 5870 you can get an XBox platinum edition for yourself and hand down the XBox you already own to your under priviliged neighbor family. Then still have enough left over to add a brand new PS3 next to your new platinum xbox ...

... I can't make that purchase.

they're out of stock everywhere and prices are jacked up $30-60. i know it's the first week, but it could be a little better if nvidia wasn't such a shit-grinning, bad-mouthing, lying lame duck sack of shit.

"From out basic visual calculations, the card appears to be extended by at least 1? ? 1.5?, giving it a total footprint of an estimated 12?-12.5 inches long. Best of luck fitting this behemoth into any mid sized tower, or even a smaller full tower."

Wow. Well, I can fit one. I believe I have room for 14" cards in this TT Armor. I'm sure they'll be plenty of drive cages that people would be willing to sacrifice for this beast as well.

I wonder how much longer do these cards can grow. These are already starting to become ridiculous. Maybe ATi should go back to the original Nvidia's sandwich design, until they start making 1 meter long dual GPU cards.

I'm surprised they let this thing develop into a card that long. I've read comments about the empty pcb spaces on the 5870 pcb. Maybe it couldn't have been done, but it sure seems they didn't focus on keeping this thing under 11".

I too have room for it but damn, are they figuring anyone who buys this thing will have a full tower, or will be prepared to buy one? I can't wait to see pics under it's hood!

Why does it need to be that long? The 295 has larger GPU's by far and it is still a 10.5" card. Plus it has a wider bus width which requires a more complex PCB.

I have room for a 295, but just barely. Anything larger than that is a definite no go. So if I want to buy the current 5870x2 as is I will have to buy a new case. I think I will wait and see what nvidia puts out for a 300x2 card before I purchase.

lol's the last I recall ATI has never debuted a card at over $550 MSRP. Nvidia on the other hand has broken the $600 plenty of times (think 7800GTX 512, which skyrocketed to $750)

A high end new generation at under $400 is a VERY good initial pricing. This also isn't a rehash of the 2900XT launch where the $400 doesn't live up to its performance vs price bracket.

It's like they engineer the PCB in a hurry. "No time to think where to put all these capacitors, let's just spread them all over the PCB as further apart of each other as possible and then we'll see how long it gets".

As far as I am concerned, NV doesn't even need to introduce a much faster GT300 card now. If they make it 9.5 inches for the same price as the 5870, and only 10.5 inches for the GTX395 card, it'll be the winning combo even with the same performance ! Not everyone has a case the size of a barn

AFAIK from reading the linked article, these are all prototypes. Card length and fan design are not final. Just saying...

QFT. The HD 5850 X2 card shown there is said to be most likely a 3rd-party design. Sort of like how Sapphire used to design the prototype BBA boards I guess?

I would hope that this is not the final size, but from what people are saying the 5870x2 shown here is the reference design. That being the case, just because of its size a lot of people aren't going to be able to use it. Almost every single graphics card company nowadays uses reference design with very little variation, except for maybe the fan design.

Yup, not sure of all your numbers, but the current prices on the 5xxx line are far from historic highs. They are in fact very reasonable and no one should be complaining about them.

Yeah. 7800GTX, 8800Ultra, and GTX280 all debuted at twice the price of 5870. What's not to love about this?

The 5870x2 will be 12 inches long. It is massive and some measuring may need to be done for certain cases. I know it will fit in my P182 with the upper bay removed so I may consider it.

Unfortunately the 5870x2 won't fit in my current ATX case because of the way my HD bay is positioned.
