Buliding spare PC . Which is the better choice ?
Slight gaming is involded with DVD playback

The system it's going into:
AthlonXP 2700+ Tbred
512MB Ram
Seagate 60GB 7200rpm
ASrock K7S41GX
Toshiba 1612 16x DVD
Liteon 48x24x48 CDRW

I have a ATI RAdeon 8500-128MB that is nearly brand new that is going in the FS/T forum . . . cheap.

It is a very nice card almost the equal of the GF4 Ti4200 . . . however, it is DX 8 and will NOT display the "eye candy" (especially lighting) of the DX9 series of cards . . .

for example, it will "play" Doom III at 6x4 reasonably well and even (barely) 8x6 but the special effects are lacking . . . it "flies" with older games even to Max Payne II (almost).

DVD playback is excellent but you are limited to the older version of ATI's DVD player . . .

Radeon 8500 all the way. If you think the 9200 has the horsepower to play any of the newer DX9 games you're sadly mistaken. Image wise they look the same but the 8500 will own.

Ati 8500 128MB or 9200 128MB
As long as the 9200 has the 128-bit memory interface and full clock rates (250/400) instead of the crippled 64-bit "SE" or "LE" versions, its performance is on-par with the declocked Radeon 8500 "LE" (a.k.a. Radeon 9100). A full clocked Radeon 8500 @ 275/550 (300/600 for some rare specimens) will best the 9200 in just about every DX8 category, though not by huge margins or anything.

Neither is a sound choice for DX9 performance.

Man, I loved my 8500, it got over 10,000 in 3dMark, stock. Sigh. The first real graphics card I ever owned...got it for $135 at best buy, no rebate, almost as soon as they came out. I installed several driver releases before they got their act together and started the Catalyst release system. Way better than any 9200 I have ever seen though. An 8500 will own a 9200 in most DX8 games (like ut2003). I would go with a 9100 before touching a 9200.

9100 is a slower clocked 8500 card, but both are still faster than the 9200 card.

DATA on most Graphics Cards

Radeon 8500
2 vertex pipelines, 1.1 vertex shader, 4 x 2, 1.4 pixel shader
275 MHz core, 275 MHz memory
2200 MTexels/s fill-rate
128-bits
DDR
8.80 GB/s memory bandwidth

Radeon 9200
2 vertex pipelines, 1.1 vertex shader, 4 x 1, 1.4 pixel shader
250 MHz core, 200 MHz memory
1000 MTexels/s
128-bits
DDR
6.40 GB/s memory bandwidth

Still both cards are way too slow for gaming and I would recommend getting a GEforce Ti 4200 or something along those lines like this one for $83 Just search E-bay or pricewatch for 64 of 128mb versions of the Geforce 4 card.

i will miss my 8500 . . . it had a really nice run in my rig for 18 months until the DX9 games . . . however, it still DOES play Doom III - not that Doom III is even worth playing - at 6x4 and barely even 8x6 (with a 300/600 O/C) . . . but the lighting effects are just 'not there' . . . sigh

*(i haven't yet put it up 4 sale . . . yet . . .)

Version 7.6 of ATI's DVD player isn't too old. For $10 (plus shipping), I ordered an ATI CD with MMC 8.5 + DVD Decoder that will validate all recent ATI DVD Decoder updates through 9.xx and it works great with my R8500s.

I doubt the 9200 will have a problem with "slight gaming". The 8500 while faster uses more power and a fan.

yeah, i saw that on ati's site - $10 bucks isn't bad (don't they offer a D/L instead of shipping?) . . . i got a 9800xt instead of ordering the upgrade.

lol! Well that's one way to get a new ATI MMC/DVD CD.

No download, only CD. I was ordering some ATI accessories anyway; CRT/DVI adapter, AIW DVI-HDTV adapter, some A/V cables, for AIW Radeon 8500DV.

Why a 8500? a 9600 pro or 5700 Ultra may not be much more and will provide much better performance.

yep, i was being "funny"

work was tough today . . .

i actually was gonna do the upgrade . . . until i got Thief - Deadly Shadows. This game is SO AWEsome, i just had to experience it "fully" (i upgraded to an Audigy 2 the day before to "hear" it properly) . . . thief's "horror" makes Doom III look like a cheap carnival fun house ride . . .

. . . anyway, the ATI Radeon Pro 256/256 was only $223 shipped from NewEgg a couple of months ago . . . and i knew about the BIOS flash to UNlock the hidden "XT" and i wasn't gonna wait for a 6800U any longer . . . so i "saved" $10 . . . my NEXT upgrade will be r500 - next year.
