ATI 9600 slow rendering and window redrawing

After removing my FX 5200, I installed an ATI 9600 to replace it. I immediately noticed the extremely slow window redrawing and rendering as soon as I loaded the ATI drivers. After posting on this forum, a user suggested that I use driver cleaner to remove the drivers. For some reason, about a day after I had the problem, the rendering issue somehow magically went away. Sufficed to say, it came back about a week later when rebooting my computer so I decided to try driver cleaner.

I used driver cleaner to remove both the ATI and the Nvidia drivers and then reinstalled the ATI ones. Now I get a message every time I boot that informs me that Catalyst Control Center is trying to use SMARTGART to optimize my ATI 9600. About a minute after the message appears, my computer completely locks up and I'm forced to restart, only to be subjected the message again once Windows restarts.

At this point I'm open to any suggestions, including reformatting. Thanks.

you can go into safemode, run msconfig and disable anything that says ati or its control conter, smartgart, etc. and save those changes, reboot and that should get rid of the message, and hopefully get rid of the lock up too. the ati drivers you are using for the 9600 are the latest right? is this a new 9600?

Yes, this is a brand new graphics card. I realize that I could go into Safe Mode to disable that stuff, which I already did, but I need to know how to run it with the drivers working. Any ideas?

i think we are communicating differently, maybe this will clear up what i ment.. the drivers will be working after you do it, the control center, etc. is just software that lets you change special settings for your card, you dont require it though, by disabling them from startup it just loads one less thing which makes the pc quicker, or in this case, may get rid of the error you receive. you need to go into safemode though to get into msconfig since your pc locks up, once you are able to boot into normal mode you will still be using the driver, still can game, still can change the resolution, etc. its just not opening the other stuff which i think is the source of the error. another option you have is to completly reinstall windows which does this and more..

have u installed the drivers for the card yet? and unistalled the old nvidia driver? go to ati.com for ati's latest drivers.
