Kind of obvious, but if you're trying to decide between Pro and Non, one point to consider besides the $95 cost difference is the bundled games with the pro, SOF II and Wolfenstein. If you want either the cost difference drops a bit.

I am not sure that they are worth the $100 difference (wolfenstien can be had for $20). But, who am I to question someone with over 5000 posts under their belt

LoL who on earth would want either game Plus you can buy either game for 19.95 and at some sites for 9.95 bargain bin special. The main diffrence in price is a faster ram and core clockspeed. And a ton of software\freebies [Said games included.]

This would be hot if that board has the Samsung 2A 2.86ns ram chips - making it essentially a Pro card.

And how would we determine this?

You can run it >PRO speeds even with the 300mhz (3.3ns) chips. I'm running the "slower memory version" at 425 / 340, no issues whatsoever.

Look at the memory chips on the card:

K4D26323RA-GC2A 350MHz 700Mbps/pin SSTL_2 (VDD/VDDQ=2.8V) 144-Ball FBGA
K4D26323RA-GC33 300MHz 600Mbps/pin SSTL_2 (VDD/VDDQ=2.8V) 144-Ball FBGA
K4D26323RA-GC36 275MHz 550Mbps/pin SSTL_2 (VDD/VDDQ=2.8V) 144-Ball FBGA

Samsung memory designations (Check the last digits on the memory)

20 2.0 ns (500MHz)
22 2.2 ns (450MHz)
25 2.5 ns (400MHz)
2C 2.67 ns (375MHz)
2A 2.86 ns (350MHz)
33 3.3 ns (300MHZ)
36 3.6 ns (275MHz)
40 4.0 ns (250MHz)
45 4.5 ns (222MHz)
50 5.0 ns (200MHz)
55 5.5 ns (183MHz)
60 6.0 ns (166MHz)

According to your own post the 3.3ns are rated for 300 MHz not 350 Mhz. The other chip type being used on this board is Infineon 3.0ns which I presume are good for about 330Mhz at best.

Id like to see this card go head to head with the 9800pro in some benchmarks as I am in the market for a new graphics card...

What I'm trying to communicate is that it is a pro card, just underclocked via software settings. I seriously doubt that there's any 9800NP out there (as of this writing) that is incapable of running at pro speeds.

9800 NP Clock = 325/290
9800 PRO Clock = 380/340
My Clock = 420/340

If you flash the bios to a 9800 PRO there's apparently a voltage tweak that may enable higher ram clocks..

I tried two of the NP cards from Best Buy, neither would do pro speeds. The memory maxed out between 320-330 mhz. Just because your card will run at pro speeds does not mean everyones cards will do it. Some of the NP cards do not have Samsung ram on them.

Without flashing the bios my BBA card with the 3.0ns Infineon will only do 400/310 max without getting artifacting in 3dMark. Oh well. Still a good deal. And I don't know about the flashing thing. The pro card comes with better memory.

I took a chance and ordered the Sapphire Radeon 9800 NP from buyXtremegear.com for $246 + $5 s/h = $251 total.

It looks like they started out as a really really really bad store (lousy resellerratings), but have improved tremendously in the last 6 months. Either they changed management, or they stuffed Resellerratings.com with a LOT of fake good reviews. It also looks like recently they have been taking the time to reply to bad reviews there, which I hope means that they actually have started caring about customer service.

6-month Rating: 8.04
Lifetime Rating: 7.44

Anyways, I took a chance and ordered from them. <Crosses fingers and fervently prays to the gods of hardware>

Let us know how it goes, I really *want* one of these....but I know I don't *need* it until HL2 or doom3. Or my Geforce 3 bites the dust.

Holy Smokes! I got it!

7/18 - I ordered it Friday Night.
7/19 - I got a confirmation email the next day (probably automated).
7/22 - Tuesday, I got an email saying my credit card has been charged.
7/23 - I got an email from Federal Express saying that "6:50 pm Package information transmitted to FedEx"
7/24 - FedEx gets the package
7/29 - FedEx delivers...

I got the Radeon 9800 NP plus a Sapphire Driver CD, PowerDVD XP 4.0 CD, S-video cable (I think), RCA type cable, S-Video to RCA converter, DVI to analog converter. The card was packed well in a FedEx box, filled with styrofoam peanuts, while the card itself was wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap.

I just ran 3DMark2003, and it's claiming that my 9800 IS a 9800, with default speeds of 290.3/324.0, which seem to be what they're supposed to be.

I had to wait (and worry) for 11 days, but BuyXtremeGear came through! Hope to God I don't have to RMA it for some reason...

Wow 11 Days I would have been worried as hell. And calling them daily asking where it is

I ordered the same thing from the same place about a week ago, and my experience was nearly exactly the same.

Maybe it's just me, but Newegg's afternoon or next-day shipping is AWESOME. Basically that translates to next day FEDEX DELIVERY for me since I live in Southern California

Great deal, btw.
