ATI 9800PRO died

My ATI 9800 Pro died this morning after about 18 months of excellent service. I was playing HL2 just fine last night. Turned off computer, went to bed. This morning, computer wouldn't boot. No signal to monitor. Tried clearing CMOS, no change. Swaped the card out with another and it booted. I tried the Radeon card in another system and it wouldn't boot in that system either. Very strange. My main system is down until I get this card back. Kinda sucks. In all my years of computing, this is the first time I've had a piece of hardware fail.

Anyway, I entered a request for warranty to ATI and was wondering how long they usually take to turn around a request. Has anyone here tried to get warranty service from ATI? It makes me glad that I bought the built by ATI (3y warr) versus the powered by ATI, which usually only have 1y warr.

RMA's take a freakin long time. I've been waiting on an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe RMA for over a month now.

ATI is pretty quick. You should be getting your card back in around 10 days after they recieve you card.

my voodoo 5 died the same way. It was a sad day around 4 days ago. It was nicely replaced by a ti 4200 though

Nope. I briefly tried using ATI tool last year, but I didn't really see enough improvement to keep using it. The card has been largely under utilized because I don't game nearly as much as I'd like to. Sometimes only a few hours a month. I'm glad to hear that ATI is quick to turn the cards around.

ati has a good rma department. my friend had his 9700pro suddenly died, like your case. he sent it to ati and got it back in less than 2 weeks. the only gripe is you have to ship it to canada

Eh, I'm too impatient. I can't wait 2-3 weeks to get my card back. I went and ordered the AIW x800XT that has the sweet $339 AR deal right now. Looks like I'll have a 9800 PRO to sell when it comes back from ATI. Should be worth a few bucks if its still sealed from ATI.

If your 9800Pro was a 128mb version, you could cross your fingers and hope for a 256mb version

If your 9800Pro was a 128mb version, you could cross your fingers and hope for a 256mb version

does it matter now? hes got a mega card in the shape of that x800xt....sell off that 9800pro when it gets back...and you could be looking at very very cheap x800xt

My last ATI RMA took a few days. Once they recieved it, they shipped me a new one the next day and I got it a few days later. And that's accross the country! (Canada)

I doubt I'll get the 256MB version. The 128mb version is prolific, while the 256 is rare. It looks like the 128mb version is selling on Ebay for an average of $140. There are a ton selling there, so competition will be stiff. I have a few friends who need an upgrade, so I may do better selling it to them.

many benchmarks and people prove that the 256 mb version is a 1 or 2 percent performance dif - and its basically another way for ati's 3rd party companies to amke even more money! don't woryy if u get a 128 version.

dont get your hopes high though, my friend who was RMAing his 9700pro in hope to get a 9800pro was dissapointed when ati send back a 9700pro

I never had any hopes of getting anything other than an exact replacement for my 9800 Pro 128mb, except for maybe a newer stepping of the GPU.
