<< <<That, and the 7500 is still supported in Win98, if that's an important point for you. I just noticed this the other day when browsing the ATI site. As of right now, the 8500 series doesn't do anything but Win2K, XP, and Me(!). >>

but isn't that a PLUS that the 7500 is supported in more platforms than the 8500? that would be a disadvantage to the 8500
>>

That's a definite plus in my book. Now that I read back what I wrote (i did it in kind of a rush), I have no idea why I added the "That, and" part. In any case, that's the situation right now. ATI just recently released a driver set that enabled AIWPro support in XP so there's a little hope that they might backtrack and release a Win98 set for the 8500 in the future?

Well, I did it -- faxed it in and got an EMAIL response, not fax as promised . Wouldn't you know they got my street number wrong -- sent them back 2 emails, 1 to correct and 1 to confirm that I would NOT be charged $10 for the change of address. Anyone know this Althon Micro company -- new website. What about the rebate house (cpginc.com)?

Email received:

Dear Gary Archer,

Thank you for your interest in the AIW RADEON 8500 128MB AGP. We will process

Athlon Micro is their distribution company. I got my original radeon VIVO through this program. One thing to be aware of. I still haven't received my rebate from that "deal" It's been over a year now and everytime I call they either cant find the rebate or promise me that a check is going out.

I bought a 64MB Radeon 8500 at CompUSA about 3 months ago that had a $50 MiR from ATi, and still haven't seen anything from it. Anyone received rebate checks from ATi in the past?

Give the Better Business Bureau or you State Attorney General's Office a call. You should get your rebate.

So does it really take 4-6 weeks to ship these? that seems an awefully long time to wait for the cards even with the rebates. Any comments?

I'm a long time ATi user (switched to a GeForce3 just recently) and just as a warning their rebates take forever. On average 3 to 6 months. Never a year thru, so that may be a problem.

<< You can get the 64mb retail AIW for $289 at newegg & you can get the 128mb AIW for $389 at newegg + $10 shipping.

HowTF can Newegg charge MORE than ATI itself? ATI = $350 (AND there's a $100 rebate). Newegg = $389 + $10 (is there even a rebate?)

HOW???

Ollie
>>

They don't charge more than ATI thats how.

How do you figure?
ATI- $399 8500 AIW 128mb
ATI- $299 8500 AIW 64mb

Newegg- $389 8500 AIW 128mb
Newegg- $289 8500 AIW 64 mb

Looks like Neweggs got em beat by $10 but Neweggs not in the business of doing rebates on used video cards.
>>

Let me know which ATI site you are looking at ok, bud? Where do you see it as $399 on an ATI site? Are you looking at the Canada site or something? Also, I didn't know the 7500 came with a remote at all.

ok this is a horrible deal. Especially if you live in california.

first off read the fine print. you have to mail in your old card with that form. it says at the bottom 4-6 weeks delivery of your new card. that means, by the time you get your card the price would have dropped anyways.

also it says $100 rebate in the carton. or on the carton. this might just be a rebate on all the retail box cards , which ATI has done before. which would make this even less hot.

To add some more negative, I've had the 8500DV for about 3 months now running on a Win2k Pro box and can't get all of the features to work properly. It took some research and tweaking to even get the firewire port to work with my DV camcorder and even now, I can only do 1 transfer and then a reboot is necessary before the next transfer. Also, a known issue (at this point) is that if you have the firewire port enabled, the sound for the TV out sucks (about 1/2 of any other Windoze sound) AND the TVonDemand is impossible to use/watch (is really jumpy). The only solution I've read for these issues (so far) is to buy another firewire card and disable the built-in port.

*shrugs* If I had to do it again, I'd buy differently. With 3 empty PCI slots, I have the liberty of expansion though (some people won't).

Hot deal for those who want to give the card a shot though.

Direct rip from the ATI Faq:
<<Who can participate in this program?
Any existing ATI graphics card end user or anyone else with another vendors card in their machine. To ensure that you do qualify, all we ask is you return your current graphics card to us after we send you the new card. It?s that easy. >>

So I don't know where you're getting u have to send in your old card first. And $350 is still hot for the AIW 8500 128mb version, shop around a bit.

Also, with the $100 rebate "read the fine print"
<<Mail-In Rebate - redeem upon receipt of new board
**mail-in rebate coupon included with carton, may be redeemed after receipt of product only >>

So I'm pretty sure this is a Trade-Up only deal, considering they need to receive the card from you before they will send you the $100 check.

Also, if anyone is confused about the initial rebate of $30-$50 for trading in your old board, the prices show on ATI's site already reflect the rebate. As in the 8500 AIW only costing $350, which means the $50 rebate on it was already taken off (this does not apply to MIR, its $400 - $50 = $350 (show on site) -$100 = $250 + $20 (to cover shipping and handling both ways).

I can't find the faq on the site, where does it say this about the $30-$50 rebate. The way I understood it is, you send in your old card and then you pay $350 for say the AIW 128MB 8500, nothing about an initial rebate. Unless you want to count an "instant rebate" as a rebate...

well it doesn't really matter, b/c if you can pay it with an AMEX blue... and get a decent receipt you'd have a smokin deal before 1 May! And then you got 60 days after that... for the price to drop. (No new items can have a claim filed if purchased on May 1 or after on the regular Blue card).

I'm still wondering how long it takes to ship these cards. If it takes 4 weeks, then the deal isn't so great. Any thoughts or experiences?

It'sa frickin awesome deal if you're patient. I find it worth it. I've been meaning to upgrade my Radeon 8500 64mb. I have an ATI Rage 3D PCI sitting around so this works out for me. Thanks for the post.
Also, you send your card in after they ship it to you. They don't charge your credit card till they ship the video card to you so it's not like they're holding your money for a month. I think the 4-6 weeks to ship includes processing time or whatever. At any rate, the faq is here.

if ATI says 4-6 weeks, consider yourselves very fortunate if you get it in 6 weeks. I purchased some cables off their website for my AIW radeon that I lost

They charged me $30 and $!5 to ship it, i thought i would have been at least ups ground or something. It came in a beatenup paper thin cardboard box with no bubblewrap or anything. The box was stamped $4.00 canadian, and only insured for $20 canadian.

<< I can get the AIW 8500 128 for $250 after rebate. I think I'll go for it. I've been wanting to get rid of my GF3 for a while plus the AIW features would just come in handy. >>

Dude, all you have is just a Geforce3 to trade in? All you need is just some crappy video card to trade in. You don't have an old PCI vid card sitting around somewhere? I'll take that Geforce3 off your hands if you're just going to try and trade it to them for what would be a roughly 50$ value. Use a crap card.
