ATI Catalyst Control Center Issues

Hi everyone,

I did a search on this forum and I noticed that a lot of people don't like the CCC since it seems to be really slow. I've seen various things mentioned but none seemed like the case that I'm experiencing. So I just want to know the final verdict for the CCC.

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an ATI X1400 card. It has a Core Duo T2400 (1.83 GHz processors) with 1 GB of RAM. Right when I turned on my computer, I experienced an immense slowdown. After a few days, I discovered that it was the CCC causing the problem. When I start the Control Center, my system slows to a crawl. Mouse tracking takes over 10 seconds per response and I can't do anything. After about 10 minutes, CCC finally loads and everything returns to normal speed.

It would be great if anyone could answer some of my questions since obviously a lot of you have had similar experiences. I'd like to know:

1. Has this slowdown happened to you to this extent?
2. How can I get around this issue or how have you dealt with these problems?
3. What is the CCC acutally doing to cripple my computer? Is it a sign of video card problems or other hardware issues?
4. Is the CCC just for settings, or does having it open actually improve video card performance?

Thank you so much.

EDIT: My video driver version is 6.14.10.6587

I would try to reinstall the .NET stuff and if that dont work use driver cleaner and reinstall the entire driver set and then reinstall .net, hope that helps

Thanks for the response. I've recently installed .NET 2.0 and it still doesn't work. Then I also completely uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled it. I still get the same problem. Is this slowdown issue strictly a .NET problem?

The CCC only uses .net 1.1. You can install 2.0, but it isn't an upgrade in the normal sense of the word. When you "upgrade" to 2.0, you basically install 2.0 alongside of 1.1. The CCC doesn't use 2.0.

First off the people that complain are those that are mad over a 10-15 second delay and they complain about it using 10mb of ram. Nothing to do with the issue you have.

Second when did ATI make a x1400 series card?

Third update the video drivers to the newest 6.3 and then report back.

If he just purchased this then I would return it or wipe the drive and start fresh as anything dell/gateway etc... should be wiped to begin with.

Another idea would be to simply uninstall the CCC and .net. The only reason to use the CCC is to enable Adaptive AA and Overdrive (without using 3rd party tools), neither of these would be applicable on a laptop with a Mobility X1400. There might be some Avivo stuff as well, but I don't use that so I can't say.

For those who complained about 10-15 second delay, does that mean there could be something wrong with my hardware because it's responding so slowly? Maybe it's because I have the Core Duos. In any case, I've already decided to get an exchange. Hopefully the new one will be ok.

So basically the CCC is pretty useless in my case?
