FYI, there's a certain promo code which can save you 10%

So, $179 - $8.95 (10%) = $170.05

Want to upgrade from my 9800 Pro.

Should I bite or wait for a better deal on a better card? Decisions, decisions....

EDIT......

I meant 5% off promo code.

This is about on par with the 6800GT. On certain games (Doom 3), the 6800GT outperforms the X800 Pro. On others (HL2), the X800 Pro outperforms the 6800GT.

http://www.beyond3d.com/reviews/ati/r420_x800/index.php?p=14 - and there is a nice table comparing x800 Pro to its 9600/9700/9800 counterparts

Thanks OCZ John. And thanks Drakkon for the links.

Looks like the x800 pro and 6800GT are about equal except on Doom 3 (6800GT wins) and HL2 (x800 pro wins).

A plus is that the x800 pro has a lower PSU requirement (even lower than for my 9800 pro it seems).

QUOTE:

"For the X800, unbelievably, the power requirements are less than the 9800 series, possibly because Ati spent some time optimizing it. The result is there are no steep minimum wattage requirements for your PSU but it still requires a connection from your power supply."

Another plus is that the x800 pro is about $100-120 cheaper than a 6800GT

The 9800 pro is probably just a generation below the x800 pro, It's probably equivalent to the x700 pro. I would probably hold out for a bigger upgrade.

As far as any of you who are looking at the Pci-e version, here is a deal on a non refurb x800 pro that's only a few bux more:

You can get a used 6800GT for around 220 or 230 refurb?
PCIE goes for 250ish :\

Funny math there... 10% of 179 is 17.9

6800gt beats this card noticable in COD (Which is what, Modded q3 engine?) All in all, most games you'll see a noticable frame increase in 6800gt over the x800pro, but is it worth the premium? If you don't want the availability of a cheap sli upgrade in the future, probably not.

Says 3 years.

If you happened to get an AGP VIVO that would mod up to the XT PE then you'd have a hell of a deal.

Yeah, in most games, even in some parts of the HL2 a 6800GT actually is faster. The only games that really show enough of a difference between them though is probably Doom 3. Sure CoD and other Q3 engine games the nVidia cards do better in (OpenGL), but an X800 Pro should run them at more than high enough framerates that you shouldn't really notice that much of a difference, at least I wouldn't think so.

If you get the 10% off, then this would be a great deal. Personally, I'm not sure if I'd give up the SM 3.0 and better speed of a 6800GT, but I don't think its enough to warrant a $75 or greater difference in price. Since these are straight from ATi with a good warranty, you don't have to worry about that. ATi is perhaps one of the best companies in video cards when it comes to warranties. I know of several people who have been able to RMA their cards after they openly told ATi that they've fitted aftermarket coolers to them (which voids the warranty of almost all other companies). Also, I know that there have been people who after the card died after it was out of production and recieved a newer card in return (so people sent in an 9800 and got an X800 in return).

The X800pro is very much worth this price and worth the upgrade over a 9800pro as you are talking about an almost double the speed of the 9800pro. I had a 9700pro and everything doubled in speed with my X800pro upgrade.

The only thing you will ever notice a difference in is probably opengl games. Which most are not so I wouldnt even consider this in the buying of this card.

HOT... I would jump on this and cash in my X800XT-PE that I got last week if I could. Definitely hot deal. I think most people ended up getting brand new cards (myself included)

This is a hot deal, but the X800 XT PE was even hotter

I'm with you...I've got my mind set on a X800XT (or faster) for my new build. After picking up a X800XT PE for $221 shipped...I'd be slightly let down with a X800 Pro UNLESS the price was REALLY cheap (<$170 shipped).
