ATI Folding gets a boost

Both a new FAH_Core revision (1.10) and several new projects became available this week. p4742-4746 have twice as many atoms as previous projects! (1254 vs 544) These do a much better job of filling the 4800-series' extra shader units. (Not much impact on 3800 series cards.)

4850 owners are reporting ~3000 PPD, and 4870 owners are up in the 4000 PPD range! Srsly, stop tempting my wallet.

Also, for those running the classic CPU client, the bonus Amber WUs that have been going all summer are nearly done. Back to Gromacs for the farm at my office.

Well, Foxery at least it's a bit of an improvement of what those cards ppd were producing under the previeous core.

Still, considering the # of shader units on these cards versus whats on the 8800gt's I was expecting ppd counts into the 10k range.

I will not consider these cards for my next build because of the cost & the low ppd versus what I and others have been getting from our 8800gt's in which we have been producing ppd in the low to mid 5,000's.

I am planning to slap together a board that can accept at least 2 of the 8800gt's (one board I saw had slots for 4!).

If Wifey approves, of course!

Oh, they are by no means done making changes... this is merely a sign of things to come

Man, I was all set to get a 4870X2, but I read that there is currently no support for the X2 cards.

I was all set to get the 4870 but was waiting to see some results. Also, HAD to upgrade my motherboard so looks like I will be getting this card, but I have to wait a lil bit longer. Oh well...........

OK, but here is what I don't understand. You can get 5200 PPD out of a 8800GT for $130. Why would I want to spend $270 (the cheapest I could find) for a 4870 that does 4000 PPD ?

That's just how it works out... Stanford didn't invent the hardware, or set the prices.

They've also mentioned that nVidia cards are not as strong on larger WUs. I don't expect 8800s to continue to achieve 5000 PPD.

5200 ppd is not typical for a stock or even oc'd 8800gt. they CAN go that high, but a 4870 oc'd would probably get just as high. this is a HUGE improvement over where we were, with hopefully more to come.

I'm just glad that I'm actually getting ~ 50% improvment over my 3870 finally...
