ATI going down soon?

ATI is quite large, and still has aways to go before it is down and out, but nVidia has beaten 3dfx in the performance sector (no debate from the sales perspective) and now they are gonna push on ATI in all of their key markets. Cheap PCs, notebooks, and Macs are all ATI Rage territory, and the Geforce MX is better than any chip ATI has ever produced by a long shot, and not as expensive as ATI's performance (cough) boards. I see this as bad, once nVidia has total control they may stop innovating as quickly. With the X-Box and value chips that are worth more than their performance sector PC chipsets, I see a slowdown in highend PC graphics from nVidia, who at this point leads the industry.

obeseotron--Excellent points. I've also given thought to the eventual lack of competition, nVidia being forced to make a decision to leave a market and concentrate on another, or a possible buyout. Then, I'll rag them for abandoning their customers, but hopefully, praise them for making me $$$$'s.

I love the way they've grabbed onto market segmenting. LOL....sure M64 isn't for us, but it is fine for people who buy Gateway.

ragiepew--I ignored the ravings of a friend extolling 3dfx way back then. Was I wrong. My first card was S3Virge, and my first "performance" card was Diamond Stealth II S220. LOL......and, I'm always behind the curve. No way I'll pony up the bucks for a GeForce (being raped hurts)....but I will go $75 for a TNT2 Ultra from a buddy who buys a GeForce. I'm always behind the tech curve ('cept for burners).
