I have Googled this for 2 weeks now. Basic run down, HDMI audio was working fine, then one day it just stopped working. I still get video so the HDMI is sort of working. Reading up apparently this is a semi common problem, one I can't find a definite answer for. No matter what I change when I go into sound playback devices it's saying the HDMI's unplugged. Here's the setup

Windows 7 64 bit
latest ATI drivers
Radeon 4870 card.

tried removing the ATI drivers, rebooting and reinstalling. Tried installing the Realtek HDMI audio drivers. still nothing. I'm hoping someone here's had this problem and was able to fix it.

Probably. The longer the cable, the more likely something will eventually go wrong with it. If you can't get around the cable being this long, you might try a new cable (I'm sure Monoprice will have one in the $20-$35 range depending upon quality you buy).

Yeah, I would check with another cable. If you have a spare and even if its shorter, you might as well bring the monitor to the computer or vice versa just to be sure.

Quebert, I have the same problem as you do. I'm using a 4350 though. My htpc is right next to my tv, and the cable is less the 5 feet long. It's becoming annoying and the wife is getting pissed. I'm just going to replace the card w/ a Nvidia card and be done with it.

I watch the AVS and other forums for HTPC issues and I don't see this as a common problem. It sounds like the most likely issue is the cable, followed by any device in the middle (e.g. AV receiver), and maybe even an HDCP issue (depends on sound source). Try an older driver release, maybe 12.1 or earlier. The newer releases have issues.

I got tired of the ATI drivers breaking every other release (losing sound after receiver input change....arrrgghhhh) so I went with an Nvidia GT430 on both machines here. They work very well with zero issues.

This is a driver problem.
I've solved this issue by uninstalling CCC and installing the 12-3 amd drivers

(12-4, 12-6 and 12-7beta have broken HDMI audio)
