After much hair pulling and frustration with the handshake bug-ie chance source on reciever to another source then go back to htpc and lose audio. I found a few workarounds.
Lots of people discovered that changing the resolution or rebooting the computer fixed the audio. Some even used keytrokes to macro out a res change then quickly change back. While this worked well enough it wasnt good enough for me so I stumbled upon something that has worked on all 3 htpcs in my home and 5 more that my friends use.
After trying all sorts of things I tried disabling the first ati service in the services menu via----->
Start > services.msc > Enter
Winkey + R > services.msc > Enter
and found this worked for all of my htpcs and my friends as well. We get PCM audio out of our 4850s and 4670s without any drop outs despite cycling power on the tv or reciever or just changing inputs.
I was hoping the newest ati driver release would fix this problem but after testing tonight it didnt so I decided to post this to save some other members from any lost hair or sanity.
