All the reviews say it is crap... I think I will wait on this one, at least until ATI gets it figures out.

This one is really not as bad when your machine meet basic requirements. This one also is made before "broadcasting flag" proposal set by Hollywood, so you can record show as your wish; I believe newer model (after next year), you can not record certain show when Hollywood "flags" it. Congress likely will give Hollywood what they want this time, get it while you can. (Although recently ruling against Hollywood, due to FCC overreaches; you know Congress will give FCC more power on this one.)

Thats never going to happen but if you can get it working right it does kick ass. If you cant get it working right, well, then your screwed. Took me 2 days to get mine working half assed. Took a week to get it working 90% right. Just had a few stuttering problems.

If you start with the right CPU, the right video card and the right OS, getting this card working is cake.

If you make the wrong selections, you will want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon.

Without having to search through 10,000 AVSForum threads can you recommend the right CPU, video card and OS combination?

Probably the most important thing is to get a Built by ATI video card.

I read somewhere that ATI used the ATI 9600XT with their HDTV Wonder.

I have used one quite with with an Asus A7N9X v2 Deluxe and also an Asus P4C800E rev. 2 Deluxe. My guess is you are probably safe if you stick with a mainstream, well-established chipset such as the 865 or NForce2. Others would have to chime in about Athlon64.

The other significant issues is the quality of your OTA HDTV signal.

I use the ATI HDTV Wonder under MCE2005 with an NVIDIA 6600GT card and it works like a charm.

Can anyone vouch for the quality of the component out? I would like to use this with my 55" Panasonic TV and I need the quality to be just as good as if I was using an HDTV Cable box. Also, I assume this has the tuner built in so I don't need anything else to get an HDTV signal (of course the quality of the signal would depend on your area).

The reviews aren't that bad. I love mine. It's totally perfect. It ran right after hardware installation and software install from their cds.

My computer doesn't even really meet their basic requirements and it's great. I can do full screen at 1600x1200. It recommends a DX9 video card, but I'm using my old old ATI Radeon AIW, 32MB DDR. It's a fossil.

Video output connection is from your graphics card, not the ATI HDTV Wonder.

I think it's capable of a beautiful picture, but I am only using a 19 inch flat Trinitron (Dell P991).

Also, others don't like the ATI Muli-Media Center, but I like the interface and it has a big screen interface via remote (10 ft viewing distance size letters). You will need to have the original ATI HDTV cd driver (even with updates downloaded from the web) to use the MMC, I believe.

And I am using Windows XP Home SP2.

HDTV Wonder has no TV output. You need to use your graphic card to output to a display.

You need it for verifying the DTV Decoder download, the rest of MMC is freely downloadable. Also the Authorscript software for the DVD burning from the library app and Gemstar Guide plus are only available on the CD.

I prefer mine in MCE 2005, but I used MMC quite a bit as well.

before ati released drivers that support mce, someone at avsforum was working on and released a set of his own drivers

Well, I guess there is no single "right" combination. But I'll tell you what I have working for me: Athlon 3200+, Radeon 9700p and Windows MCE2005.

You could probably get by with half the CPU, and with a lesser video card, but I'd stick to DX9-compliant (regardless of others' experiences), and something with more get-up-and-go than a GeForce 5200. I don't think I've heard of anyone who's had a problem getting it running with MCE, but I have heard of many who have had poor luck with MMC on XP.

I have an MCE 2005 system set up on an old KR7A-RAID system with an XP 2000, Radeon 9700 Pro, Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500MCE, and the ATI HDTV Wonder. My only complaint is that it only works with OTA HDTV so I need to get an antenna to take advantage of the HDTV piece.
