With the death of the Video Wonder, will ATI ever come out with a fully hardware-handled MPEG2 card so I can make my own TIVO with a modest CPU (<1GHz)?

A nextgen ALL-IN-WONDER would add:
- Full hardware mpeg2 encode/decode.
- Programmable support for other codecs like mpeg4/divx would be sweet!
- Digital tuning / hdtv support.
- Don't forget to keep the digital sound passthrough.
- One unified fullscreen interface for tv/dvd viewing, recording, and tv listing/programming. And designed to look good on a ntsc tv. Heck, license the tivo interface!
- Full keyboard support for us with programmable remote controls.
- Picture in a picture (like Matrox).

Also, don't announce a card and all its great features and then pull the plug at the last moment!

Thankee Sai.

DRIVERS, DRIVERS, DRIVERS!!

ATI's Radeon cards have gotten some good reviews. But when you dig a bit below the surface, it is apparent that ATI still has an issue with delivering timely drivers and driver updates.

Probably the most glaring problem is support of Windows 2000.

This makes choosing the ATI card problematic for a segement of the market that is a natural for the Radeon, what with its reputation for higher visual quality in 3d and 2d than the Geforce2. A lot of the same people who care a lot about 2D visual quality but still want a hot 3D card, will also be running Windows 2000, or thinking about it.

ATi:

Why don't you hire better developers to write some decent (not buggy) drivers for current and older products? ATi is well known for poor drivers and poor driver support.

Here are my top questions and reasons that are making me hesitate before buying an AIW Radeon:

1. When will the drivers support custom resolutions?
2. Will there be a full-featured open-source linux driver available from ATI in the near future (with support for on-the-fly TV out switching and comparable acceleration to the Win drivers)? If so, when?
3. Will ATI introduce a product with on-board hardware MPEG2/MPEG4 encoding?

why unified drivers? that wouldn't help things much at all. sure it might help initial compatability with OSs on new cards, but if you want overall speed, you're going to need drivers customized for your hardware for all the quirks/features it has.

I found it very easy to follow individual card driver developement on my Voodoo 3, and Voodoo Banshee, both of which use their own drivers.

Good one:

There was talk on an Nvidia bug-GeForce2 DXTC-To do with sky textures on Nvidia's own demo-Dagoth Zoological Gardens, which was done the show the GeForce's capabilities with Tranformation-Lighting. The Radeon which is known to be T&L compatible, was said to produce superior image quality than the GeForce2.

But later it was said there was no so called bug, but the Radeon was not using Fog Emulation.-Can you tell me specific info on this matter, or was it a wronful statement from a said UK site The.egister. R missing, no site named specically LoL. Radeon provides no support for foggy-hazy views in its graphics implemantation?(Curious) NPI

Also:

Times are bad right now for Technology companies(sales), even though ATI show a profit margin this last quarter. Is things looking up?

Also has ATI agreed to do embedded Radeon chipsets for Intel also, True or False, or in the works?

Will design efforts for ATI's next 3D card focus on more speed, more features (like FSAA), or both? The Radeon supports many impressive things in hardware but is a little slow, a fast card with all the Radeon's feature would be wonderful.

Unified drivers allow for contiuous updates of older products, something ATI is known for (not supporting their older products with newer drivers). Anyways, when is this interview?

With NVIDA's advent into the budget card(geforce 2mx) market, I hear you'll be releasing a version of the Radeon called the Radeon VE. If this is true, how will it compete with the geforce2MX, and will the driver support improve for Radeon card owners like myself in the near future?

Perhaps he knows if there are any tuner graphics cards that are compatible with AMD CPU's. Apparently the Radeon All In Wonder with 32 Mb DDR Ram in the MSI K7T Pro motherboard is not 100% compatible.

thanks!

Ask him when they are going to fix the Windows Media Encoder 7 error that affects the RADEON 64MB DDR (VIVO) and ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON using driver version 4.12.3044 or 4.12.3056 under Windows 98 and ME. Cause its a really pain not being able to capture.

Thanks,
Mike

When will ATI (or anyone) release a board that has BOTH wonderful 2d graphics (like my Matrox G400) and wonderful (well at least very good) 3d performance for gaming.

If we had 2 AGP slots this would not be an issue.

The new MSI mobos no longer have a PCI slot.

I am not willing to spend big bucks on an expensive gaming card only to suffer eye strain when I need 2d (which is most of the time).

I'd like to enjoy superior 3d gaming on the occasions I do game.

a) Where is the Radeon MAXX that was so hyped originally
b) Where do they think they stand in the notebook arena now that nVidia has announced the GeForce2Go, which to be honest, will annihiliate the Rage Mob. 128

Why the Graphic card Radeon work so bad with Via chipset?
What make ATI to resolve this problem?
How to make to have monet back?

I have a siemens computer with a mothercard Aopen AX63pro and a chipset Via 133 and a soundcard Crystal SoundFusion and Windows 98 SE
I buy a new graphic card All in wonder RADEON, but many problems have appeared before she is running like a ordinary graphic card.
Yet, i can't use to see DVD ou TV, a punct exclamation is by side the WDM Theater rage audio (code 10) in device manager.
I don't find a good solution in the ATI'web site. The ATI'hot line can't make more anything for me.
I don't unterstandt why ATI haven't maked a special (debug?) driver to find the reasons of the failure.
I see in forums that many people with Via chipset have problem with ATI's products.
Do ATI officially inadvisable the buy of theirs products for computer with Via Chipset?
Do the owner of computer with Via chipset propose to boycott the ATI products, or ATI will react rapidly?

I would like to re-emphasize the following questions and i hope these dont get drowned out by complains about poor driver support:

<< Maybe touch on the recently released agreement with Intel & the possible integrated chipset (ie. are they making a chipset for Intel or are they making a video solution for an intel chipset). >>

<< ATI recently made a deal for a broad cross-licensing agreement with Intel. What does this mean? What kind of technologies is ATI going to be using from Intel and vica versa? >>

<< Does ATI have something in store to compete with nVidia's newly acquired technology? >>

<< I heard some place a long time ago that Ati was going to try entering the 'set top' market. Any new news on this venture? >>

Essentially, i would like to know what ATi is doing to penetrate "non PC video card" market. and when do they expect any products out there in good quantities. Examples of these "non PC video card" market would be chipset, settop boxes, game cube etc

Mahle,

My All in Wonder works fine on a KT7-RAID with an AMD Thunderbird.
What specific compatibility issues are you hearing about?
It might need a bit of tweaking and installing the latest 4in1 drivers,
but it can be made to work.

mike511,

Have you tried the 4.12.3063 version of the drivers? or any of the
newer general Radeon releases?

nexialist:

I've heard others compare the visual quality of the Radeon favorably
against the Matrox. I don't have them side by side, but I can't tell
any difference between my G400 at work and my Radeon AIW at home.

"The new MSI mobos no longer have a PCI slot." ?????! Last I knew they had Six!

Not to plug another site, but it sounds like a lot of these questions could be
answered by a visit to the forums at Rage3d.com

"Why the Graphic card Radeon work so bad with Via chipset?"

No problems for me. I have installed the VIA 4 in 1 first then had the graphic drivers installed after.

Did you remove the old drivers and then reinstall VIA 4 in 1 then the Radeon drivers?
