The whole hybrid power thing for power savings using a low power integrated igp seems to have fizzled out . Are they not working on that anymore? I was kinda hoping to use a mobo with that for a lynnfield build but last i checked hybrid power still required a shutdown and was mostly just for a few notebooks and hasn't had any news in a while, as well as windows 7 not supporting it...

so whatever happened to hybrid power?

The focus is on smart hardware power management. GPUs today use much less power in 2D mode than prior GPUs.

Right, a 4870 512 MB still uses about 60 W at idle, almost all of which is eaten up by the non-underclocked memory. So, yes, the GPU can be shut down to quite some extent. And yes, smart hardware power management would really be needed here. It's just that we didn't get it from AMD..

I hope the 5850 really uses 27 watts idle >.< graphics cards used to use so much less power than they do now :\ even stuff like the ati x800. Anyone have any recommendations for an ATX p55 board? I was thinking something like the gigabyte ud3r but nothing really stands out for me atm, all the boards are kinda bleh.

Get the cheapest Gigabyte (or whichever brand you prefer) which has all the features you need (not *want*). In my case that would be the cheapest one of the entire bunch

How many PCI/PCI-E 1x slots do you guys use in general? I dunno if I should get the
MSI P55-CD53 with 3 PCI-E x1, 3 PCI or the
gigabyte ud3r with 4 PCI, 1 PCI-E 1x, 1 PCI-E 4x :/

I dunno if PCI-E 1x is gonna take over in the future or something, heh but I was leaning towards the gigabyte because of the solid capacitors and better reviews.

I've got one GPU and a PCI Audigy. Recently I've thrown out a PCI 10 MBit / BNC card. I can't see myself needing any more slots than this. A second GPU would be nice, but mine is crunching BOINC 24/7.. and I couldn't handle the added power consumption and heat output anyway. Generally I'd prefer Gigabyte over MSI.
