A friend of mine just got a compaq sr1650nx but he has a 6800GS in his other computer and wants to put it in the compaq (since its better) but hes not sure if there will be problems with ati onboard with nvidia. I said no but hes scared. He said hes seen afew people with problems about it so should he get a new vid card or try the 6800GS? I figured it was the mobo people were having trouble with. Its a PCI-E I'm not sure if he can turn off onboard vid since its a compaq and they might of locked it. >< This is good stuff

EDIT: Talked to him he still hasn't done it and wont even look to see if he can disable onboard vid. I told him what to do but hes doesn't know what to do when it comes to that. Emailed compaq/hp about it still no word probably because its a holiday and all. Knowing him hes probably sitting on the floor looking at the motherboard and his card in his hand..HAHAHA

So if anyone knows if any of the SR series compaq can turn off onboard vid please post or PM me. Haven't found anything online about it but since it has a PCI-E x16 you should think it would. Right?

If it has a PCIe x16 slot, it should disable the onboard vid when you install the 6800GS. Might want to uninstall the ATI drivers first, though. If it is running Windows XP, he can always do a system restore if it does not work.

First uninstall all ATi DISPLAYdrivers only. If this is an ATi chipset motherboard, you will have ATi chipset drivers show up in the WinXP control panel the you Do Not Want To Dissable

Then boot into motherboard bios and dissable on-board video.

boot into WinXP safe mode and using Driver Cleaner3, remove all traces of ATi Display drivers only!

Shut-off Comp and using all precautions install new video card. Re-start and load video card drivers off CD.

I have a sr 1430 nx Compaq with a Radeon 9250 pci 256 mb card that I added.

I would suggest going to HP & Compaq website and getting the MB specs. Mine has an Asus Board but it doesn''t have AGB or PCIE, only PCI. If he knows which slots are which he doen't need go to HP. He can get a helpful spec sheet on the system though.

If the MB has the right slot, install it and boot to Bios and go to the advanced tab, select yes for the appropriate video adaptor slot. Bios should turn off the on board video controllers. F10 and exit.

Bios have recognized the card when he gets there.

That is all I had to do for the install.

However, I had a problem in that the task bar in xp was missing.

My cure for that was to set up a new admin acct and then reboot. The task bar came back . There are also some registry repairs on the web that may handle the missing task bar, if he has a problem with it. Those downloads didn't cure it for me, but the new admin acct did.

Compaq can help him with it as it is apparently a common problem.

The bottom line, my graphics quality is much better and the performance has gone up too.

Good luck

Redd1, you are the man!

The video died on my compaq1430NX which has been doing the job for 10 years (after new HD, CPU fan). The machine can still be accessed from my home network so I believe the memory, MB and hard disk are OK. I installed a new PCI video card and still nothing. Problem: I have no way of testing the video card which is a new ATI Rage with 32 mb because I don't have another machine with a pci slot. I know the monitor and the cable are fine so it's one of two things:

1. I need to disable the onboard video from the BIOS but I can't see anything so how can I access the BIOS? IF you can give me the step by step key strokes the way a blind man would do it...

2. The video card is a dud but I have no way to test

So I'd like to pursue #1 if I can b4 I return the card.

Thanks.

Thanks.
