ATI "optimizations" in Crysis?

Some guy links an image apparantly wanting to show the difference between gtx285/480 and the radeon5870.. but i cant see any difference.

Didnt someone mention ATI had said they would prioritize performance and that it might degrade IQ in the coming months? And as i said, i dont see the difference between the two images i refer to above.

If its just to "win" a fps benchmark by a few %, its lame. If its a general performance tweak across the board (ie for all games) without noticable drop in IQ, i dont mind at all.

I've looked at the comparison pictures posted in that thread.. and they look EXACTLY the same to me. I looked at them for several minutes, but I simply could not see any difference.

Is this like, a funny joke that I'm not party to? I'm confused.

If you look really close in the AF screenshots you can tell at the really far away distances that the ATI card gets blurry sooner than the Nvidia card.

It's more likely just the end result of different AF settings on cards that have different methods of implementing AF since the difference in IQ isn't very large.

So, is it a bug like some suggest? i recall some AA/AF bugs with both ATI and Nvidia in the past but not sure when the last was

When you look at the "difference" image, you can see they are different...not that noticeable honestly but there is a difference. Maybe it's worse in other areas of the game.

It might well be worse in motion.
Things like AF and a possible flickering issue are almost always going to be more of a motion thing.

but flickering and blurred textures.
You can't see flickering in still images

Question is, is that 16xAF with Cat AI on or off? If it's Cat AI on then it's not really news, if it's Cat AI off and it's doing performance enhancing and quality reducing things, it becomes an issue.

AMD's AF looks blurrier from the ground shots. Is this optimization from Cat 10.3?

Oh? Has this been a long-standing issue with Cat AI?

ATi's 5xxx parts undersample when performing AF, they have had this since launch and it appears to be a hardware choice that they made(reduced angle dependancy versus their prior parts, but lacking in sampling some of the time). BFG covered this in his IQ article a while back.

I thought the 5.xxx series had near perfect ala NV30 AF implementation? I know in the past ATI cards have had aggressive angle dependent AF that caused blurry and flickering. But thought they moved past that with the lastest generation?

Honestly I think I have noticed this in other games. I've been playing warhammer online lately and you can see points in the terrain where the detail seems to change and there is a pretty distinct line. I'll see if I can capture it with a screen shot tonight though. I'm interested to see if disabling catalst AI fixes it too, it has been bothering me. I knew something was off but I figured it was just the crappy game engine at first, but this is giving me some 2nd thoughts.

ok so the 5870 is a known "bug" or thing from the very launch of that series?

why are the 480 images so noticably worse on the Metro screens in that pic?

cut and paste from xbitlabs on the Metro IQ difference showing poor iq for 480.:
------------
Perhaps this reduction of quality is the trick the GeForce GTX 480 resorts to in order to deliver a higher speed in Metro 2033? The game developer answered to our question promptly. Here is what Oles Shishkovtsov, 4A Games Chief Technical Officer said:
No, the observed difference in quality is not due to the performance of the graphics cards. Indeed, graphics cards from Nvidia and ATI render the scene differently in some antialiasing modes. We are trying to find a way to correct this issue. Again, this has nothing to do with speed.
Hopefully, people from 4A Games will find a solution.

bug and more bugs it seems.

I can barely tell a difference between the two pictures. I did not look at the file name so I have no idea which one is which card. The upper one seems a bit more sharp in the distance compared to the bottom. However, I know that in motion, things that are a bit too crisp in the distance can give you texture shimmering, while a bit more blur reduces the shimmering but obviously add blur.

So you have a toss up. Either shimmering or blur, a happy medium would be nice! But neither picture to me I can indicate either card is having too much one way or another.

It's tough to say in regards to Crysis. That one screenshot with the boardwalk has the AMD card blurring sooner, but maybe that's a method discrepancy. However, running POM on in Crysis prevents AF from being used anyway, so what would it matter if you're truly going to max settings (unless they fixed that)?

Those screenshots from Metro 2033 are glaringly obvious though, what a difference. It'll be interesting to see what happens after it's "fixed."

Don't look like theres any AA in the metro screenshot on the 480 on the chest, light fixture and the boards. Alot of places besides the characters really. The textures on the floor get blurred alot in the distance as well.

The textures in the crisis screenshots get softer on the radeon as you get further away.
