Pick the right tool for the job I guess I'm using nVidia now, but i've used ATI before, and will again i'm sure.

"Chipset" is misleading. It implies motherboard chipsets, which this poll is obviously not discussing since it's in the "Video" forum.

Also this is flamebait. It's just gonna piss the world off.

ditto, and if both offer an equal value, i perfer ATi (brand loyality)

don't you have a ti4200? long time no upgrade....i know the feeling

unless ati enables stretched desktops for dual monitors, i'll be going nvidia again.

Its what you prefer, both do the job, and if you were running a game in one room and the same game in another room and didnt know which was which you would be able to tell.. ( that is if both cards are of same general level )

I have had a ati all in wonder pro 8meg for 5 years with no problems..
I have a ati all in wonder 9800 pro in new machine.. no problems..
I put nvidea mx200 32meg in my 8 year olds computer with no problems..
I put nvidea mx400 32meg in my nieghbors computer with no problems..
I put a ati 9600 256 meg card in my 13 year olds computer with no problems..

You get the picture.. all cards work fine .. I like ati just because of the aiw multi tasking

neither company is going to put out a crappy product or they would go out of biz eventually..

Ati was best on image quality until they decided to "optimize" [read -cheat-] trilinear filtering. But for multimonitor purposes, not only desktop work but also spanned gaming Nvidia is the only decent way to go. Matrox Pharelia is an ancient expensive piece of junk.

So right now i would wait to compare next gen but with i bit of suspect that Nvidia will be my next choice.

btw i own an Ati Radeon 9700 PRO that refuses to upgrade my system to a decent multimonitor rig.

i think i like ATI a bit better, but thats probably because the only nvidia card i've had just totally sucked (64 bit fx5200, yes i was a total n00b when i bought it lol). also cuz my first graphics card was ATI, and the gamecube uses ATI.

Weren't there issues with heat/power with some of the Nvidia chipsets? Obviously Radeon has those problems too but I kind of thought that Nvidia was more brute force while Radeon had a more efficient design.

I have to agree with you in terms of Linux drivers, which has caused me to go nVidia in the past. However, I can't remember the last time I played games in Linux, I guess it would have been RTCW, which I can play in Windows as well. So, as long as I can get X (2D) working with the card, anything will do. Of course, your needs may differ, and I do like to at least have the ability to use a $500 card for 3D in every OS I use. Right now, I have an X800 XT on pre-order for $478 (shipped), and I have found a 6800 Ultra for pre-order for $580. So far, price has been the deciding factor - availability seems about equal.
