OK, I am curious. I would like to be able to overclock my HD2900XT, however, I do not see the ATI OverDrive option in CCC 7.10. Now, do I have to be using an 8-pin power connector for this option to even show up?

yup, your going to have to have a 8pin pci-e power connector plugged in to see Overdrive in CCC.

I just downloaded that program and I immediately went to work on OC'ing my card. I've noticed that some people can get their HD2900XT 1GB to Core Clocks of 850MHz and Memory Clocks up to 2250MHz... I've gotten my Core up to 825MHz and the Memory up to 1200MHz. Rivatuner states that anything above that is dangerous. Then how come other people are getting higher on the exact same card?

-Edit-

I have my HD2900XT 1GB overclocked to Core: 825MHz and Memory: 1200MHz. I ran COD4 and I went to the lowest resolution, lowest possible settings I could and started up the map mp_crossfire. I got around 200FPS+. However, after about five minutes of running around the map and enjoying that amount of frames, the game locked up and I got artifacts all across the screen. What I want to know is, would it be my Core clock or my Memory clock that would cause that?

I lowered my Core clock to 815MHz and my Memory clock to 1180MHz and things seem to be running very smoothly. I set my resolution to 800x600 and I set all the settings to low except AA which I set to 4x. I'm averaging about 225FPS in most maps in COD4. When I set it to 1280x1024 with all the settings on High, (including 4xAA) I average about 75FPS. I figured I would have gotten more.

I have one more question. At around what resolution do you become CPU or GPU limited?

Use ATITool to scan for artifacts. I can clock my 3870 at 850/1250 without seeing any artifacts in crysis for several hours, however the fur cube in ATITool shows artifacts until I lower it to 825/1180.

ati tool is brutal. that is the best test that I know of for gpu stability.

@OP if others are getting 2250, that's 1125 ddr, so your 1200 is significantly better than that. 815/1180 is very good for a 2900xt, unfortunately I think that the higher memory clocks help the 3870 much more since we've all seen how useless the 512 bit bus was for 2900xt.

i have an HD3870. when i look at the ATi overdrive in CCC. (first of all i unlocked it and cant lock it back again) there is a section that says current and requested clock settings.

in requested it says:
GPU clock 777 MHz
memory clock 1126 MHz

but in current it says:
GPU clock 300 MHz
memory clock 1126

whats wrong here?

Current settings refers to the 2D clock speeds which is self explanatory- whenever you are not using a 3D App the clock speeds are lowered thus reducing power consumption and heat. When you enter a 3D app like a game your 'Requested' settings will be used.

I believe that is because you void your warranty by unlocking it. IIRC, once you unlock it, it stamps the date and time you unlocked it, I believe it even tells you that when you have to confirm that you are going to unlock it.
