I would like to upgrade my graphics card and I am thinking of buying an ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR. I have Geforce SDR now and it is damn slow!

But i hear, that some people have serious troubles with Radeon.

1.) Trinitron monitors - issues(I have IIYAMA VisionMaster PRO 450)
2.) some people said, that 16 bit colour is disgusting!
3.) How does Half Life, which uses 16 bit graphics look on this card?

I really like to play games smooth and I want to have good 2D quality and raw 3D performance!

Please, tell me, how does the older games as Quake 2 and Half Life look on this card!

P.S. Sorry for my very, very bad english!

First of all regarding the trinitron monitor problem, I wouldn't worry about that. Currently ATI is working on solving the problem, and I have tested some files for them which eliminated 99% of the shimmering (I have an Iiyama Visionmaster Pro510, but I've heard the files don't work as well with the pro 450). In any event, it seems clear ATI is working on a solution, and the shimmering in the first place isnt really that bad in my opinion. And to answer your final two questions, I have never noticed poor 16 bit color, and the only older game I ever play with my Radeon is half-life and it looks great. So if your looking for a card thats good in both 2D and 3D I don't think you could go wrong with the Radeon.

I agree totaly, just got a Radeon 64 VIVO and love it... The visual quality is far above a Geforce 2 GTS (just had one) and the gaming is great too... Just tried UT in the wide open arena with 16 bots and in 32 bit color got avg. of 40+ and while on the phone with a buddy of mine running his Geforce DDR (CL) at the same Mhz & 32 bit, 16 bots only got 7-9 frames avg. (Note the is not a Geforce 2 GTS...) Needless to say he was impressed and depressed at the same time...

BTW...

P3 700e @1000mhz 1.65

My $.02

I recently upgraded from a Matrox G200 to a Radeon 32 Meg DDR (Retail). I was a little disappointed. The 2D quality is good but not excellent like the G200. I've also had problems with Links 2000 and trying to play Unreal Tournament in full screen mode. I am in the process to switching to a G400 Max. Given that I am not a hard core gamer, I think I'll stick with the G400 Max until the next generation of cards appear that combines the 2D quality of Matrox with the 3D prowess of the GeForce Ultra

Here's my system spec for reference:

Intel Celeron 533a/824 Mhz
192 Megs of Ram
Maxtor 30 Gig 7200 RPM Drive
Iiyama Vision Master 450 Monitor

Heh, if the 2d of ATI doesn't impress you, then you can only get another Matrox, the G800 that will never come out, so good luck waiting! =)

I recently bought the retail 64mb radeon and I have not seen any shimmering effect on my trinitron. I also have no complaints about the 16 bit, the game I play the most is Half Life/Counterstrike and it looks incredible on my radeon.

Another suggestion might be the Voodoo 5500. It isnt quite as good as the radeon, but you cant beat the current price/performance ratio. I saw it on mwave.com for about $175.

I think Matrox makes the best quality cards on the market. By all means, they are not "gaming" cards and are not priced like one. However, they do cover their ground exceptionally well and have yet to let us down. I honestly believe that if the G400MAX had a make over where:

Die size dropped to 0.18
Clock speed increased from 166MHz to approx 230MHz
Addition of DDR Ram with 256-Bit Dual Bus
Good OpenGL Drivers = )

You would have a good all round card. Maybe we might see a G450MAX.

You can't beat the Radeon right now. Hands down the finest ALL AROUND card there is. Was a pleasure to sell my 64 meg GTS and move to this.

It doesn't matter, you can force Half-Life to run at 32 bit, I read about a command somewhere, so you can go ahead and get it. =)
