The 9700 and 9800 are better than the 9600xt, but it comes w/hl2 so the video cards costs like $100

I have the component (HDTV adapter) for the Radeon 8500, does anyone know if that will work with this card?

I realize the video card comes with a coupon, but it really carries little to no value.

That was a response i recieved from someone on the For Sale/Trade forums. I would get this deal if i could get a decent price for the HL2 coupon as I have no interest in the game.

How does this card compare to my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128 mb. I've been thinking about upgrading my vid card for some time but I don't know if I'd get a significant improvement over what I have now.

I'm pretty sure that the 9000 is a directX 8.1 video card, the 9600XT is directX 9. HL2 is a directX 9 game. In you intend on play HL2 you will most likely have to upgrade your card.

Get an extra $10 off. The ad shows $10 instant and (2) $20 rebates, but since the rebates are actually $20 & $30, you get an extra $10 off for $199 - $60 = $139 (plus tax of course). If you look at the ad closely you could possibly argue for a $20 instant as the ad shows that (probably a typo) but of course that is a YMMV.

Education is your friend. Games that run on DirectX 9 will be backwards compatible with DirectX 8 hardware in almost all circumstances. They simply won't look as good on the older hardware. Any developer that required DirectX 9 hardware for a game at this point in time would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Hmm thanks for all the info! But my main concern is will there be a significant improvement in performance? Here are my specs

XP 1900+
shuttle ak32L
512 meg crucial PC2100 memory
radeon 9000 pro 128 meg.

I only have enough money to upgrade one item at the moment

hmmm. what games would be played?
ut 2003, i didn't really see a difference going from a 8500 le to a 9500 pro
but some of the newer games (max payne 2) come up with different defaults as far as graphic levels and resolutions
i've decided not to upgrade again unless i buy/want a game that won't play AT ALL on the current system
but that's ME
this forum is connected to a website w/video card reviews that could (and do) go into far greater detail than anything somebody could spout on a bbs (and edit later to avoid being taken to task for)
hth

Well half life 2 for sure. I spend a lot of time playing Sim City 4 Deluxe right now as well. I love FPS games (Call of Duty, BF1942, MOH:AA, etc)

hl2 keeps getting delayed
some people might scoff, but i notice a lot of info about doom and hl2 has dried up imo
i remember the new doom was supposed to run on a voodoo 3 2000...
on the front page of this site -- they are talking about the new pci express, and it's technological implications -- might affect those upgrade choices further...

edit:

radeon 9000pro is pretty dog slow these days, it gets slightly beat by the old 8500 half the time. i knwo cuz i have one. in 1942 i have to set textures and other goodies to low already to keep things smooth at 1024x768 in 16bit. i keep draw distance to 100% cuz you cant sacrifice that if you dont' wanna die

i can't imagine what setting sacrifices would have to be made to play hl2 on a radeon 9000pro there are some games that run better on the 9000pro of course, q3 engine games for instance. call of duty...

if you like to play games now, it doesnt matter, just upgrade, if you are on a tight budget and are waiting for hl2 and stuff, wait for it to come out b4 u upgrade.

Good point. At that time, someone will be offering a deal on the 9600XT card - which will make it's price less than it is today.

Basically, this is the minumum card you are gonna want for HL2.

Yes, it will run on older cards, but this is the cheapest card that'll get you 1024x768 with the goodies turned on at decent framerate.

it's only about 20-30% faster on current dx8.1 games, but about twice as fast on dx9 games.
