Radeon 6950 performance (in DX 9 and 10) for $149 isn't a bad bargain. But no DX11 and super power hungry. You'd be better off trying to find a deal for a Radeon 6870 for a similar price. A bit slower, but far more efficient and has DX11.

Yea, this deal has been on FW a while now and I've been thinking whether or not to get it for my nephew. It is a great deal btw just not sure about the company. In terms of performance it's way up there with much more expensive and modern cards. The two common questions will eventually come up for this and they are,

1. is the performance fast enough
2. should you wait for next gen/dx11 support

First one is yes it is fast, really fast. But it's 2 cards in one so it's loud, hot and hungry

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-performance-radeon-geforce,2997-7.html

As for the second, you shouldn't need to worry about DX11 support as many games don't support it and even those do aren't that appealing. Just google for dx9/dx10/dx11 comparisons and make the judgement yourself.

If anyone can vouch for the company I might bite before it's over. Here's hoping.

yea, don't kid yourself if you are considering buying this. I have a nice antec 900 that's quiet with good cooling going on and it would be fine for me. I think I'm going to bite with amex and see what happens.

You can get these for $100 all day folks if you shop around, not worth $150. Plus these video cards are 3 year old technology, you're better off buying a 5850.

I think people still don't understand their own reasoning to be honest. For $150 you are getting a fast older gen card, just louder and power hungry. If you can live with that then it's a great deal. DX11 is a joke for the most part. Just Google for the comparison to see whether you want it or not, it's not hard.

Most 5850/70 are loud based on reviews. In addition, on the same performance scale, it'll be more equivalent to a 6870 than a 5870 or 5850, which still cost a lot more. So you want to pay possibly, and far likely, $100-$200+ more a less older card (58xxx) or a current gen card that performs much less than this card (68xx)? All for having DX11 that isn't all that? I an understand if you have cooling issues and are green but otherwise .

As far as getting them for $100 it be great to see links for those but I can't find any except for $200+ Post the links or history if you have them. Single 4870s might be cheaper alone but I advise, as I think many others might, to get the X2; Otherwise this is a steal of a deal to get a top performing card.

It's not a great deal at all. Performance-wise it's not too bad, comparable to a 1 gb 6950. However, taking into account the normal hassle factor of xfire including severe intermittent frame drops, I think that it's better to compare it to a 5870 or 6870. Both of those are MUCH MUCH quieter, have dx 11, and can be found for similar prices.

Even better might be to buy a 5850 and OC it, it still won't be as loud/hot/power hungry as the 4870x2 but it will cost about the same and have dx11. Also, you could in the future throw in a 2nd if you wanted some more life out of the system and didn't mind the xfire issues.

I agree with bryan, I don't think it's a hot deal, just a hot, loud card that you could replace with a slightly more expensive card that would be cooler, way quieter and use way less power.

One last time, in simpler terms.

6870 prices starts at around $175
5870 prices starts at around $287
5850 prices starts at around $189

By pricewatch.com

All three PERFORM less than the 4870x2 according the the link to Tom's. You should verify with other websites as well. Performance wise, and I don't care what percentage it is because people choose the next higher performing cards for a good reason, it beats them all for a lot less money.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-performance-radeon-geforce,2997-7.html

And again, deciding over the 4870x2 means forgoing the lackluster DX11 support and getting a loud, power hungry card. So performance or green? DX11 is a joke to be consider. By the time games truly make use of DX11 you'll be ready for the next gen cards, if it even comes to that. Seriously, I can just Google now for DX9/DX10/DX11 comparisons and show how pathetic it is most of the time, while lowering framerates.

I don't recommend this card if you don't have a good case. But if you want performance pay the $150 bucks and get more FPS for your money! Isn't that what you "hard core" gamers want, those with top of the line components squeezing every once of your CPU and GPU increasing the power and heat anyways?

I stand baffled still. Old card but good price with performance that beats anything mentioned in comparison.

Quick search on hardforum forums yielded one for $125, http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1634204&highlight=4870x2

Here's another with a waterblock already installed for $135, http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1631923&highlight=4870x2

Those are just the from hardforum, if you daily search anandtech, TPU, OCN, eBay, etc... you can snag one for $100.

I still have this and have had no reason to upgrade. The newer cards only perform less or on par with it (on the higher ends) and cost more. Yes it is hot, but loud? Not any more than others. I put a 3rd party cooler on it and run it fully OC'd with no issues. DX11 is not enough reason to upgrade.

The big downside is driver support. They pretty much quit supporting this card a year ago. None of the newer tweaks etc really touch this card. They work, but I've had no reason to upgrade the drivers for quite some time.

The 4xxx series was not good on HD decoding so if your planning on HD streams get something else. I also believe 4xxx card can only do two screens at a time. The 5xxx Series begins triples screen output which is you have it you cant live without it.

Also the ATI 7XXX series is happening in the next 2 months making this 3 gens old.

When the new video cards arrive we should see a lot of price drops. The 7XXX series is more than a die shrink it has some revisions to it that are supposed to increase the performance too. ATI is very good at releasing low to high cards on launch so you might just see a $130 7xxx card that surpasses this and has much better hd decoding and thermals.

I'd rather pay the extra $15 to $25 and get the warranty (and I am assuming the one posted in the OP comes with a warranty).

You will get all the problems of a crossfire setup along with high heat and high power consumption. All for decent DX 9/10 performance. No DX11 means you really need to know exactly what you are getting for the price.

Do not fool yourself into thinking anything else.

Personally the DX 11 and the problems of crossfire mean no for me.
