ATI Radeon, screen resolution

I have an ATI Radeon graphics card, I think it is a 7000 in one of my pc's. I just recently upgraded the driver as I couldn't play open gl games but now I can't put the resolution higher than 1024 x 768.

If I change the resolution higher the whole screen isn't showed at one time. As I go up with my mouse the screen moves down or if I move down the screen moves up. The same goes for the sides.

Any ideas?

How old is the monitor? If I go any higher than 1024X768 , my monitor doesn't even come back on after resizing, heh. But then again it's about 7 years old :S

The monitor is only about 2 years old.

I forgot to mention, the higher resolutions worked fine before installing the latest driver. But then again I couldn't play Quake etc.

At first I thought it's trying to protect the monitor by letting the desktop resolution increase but not the screen resolution (if anyone can understand that)

It's rather difficult to explain.

You can compare it to the way Internet Explorer work, the whole page isn't shown at one time you have to scroll around to see everything. The only difference is that my desktop is doing this and not some program. If I set the resolution higher in Quake, then I only see two thirds of the screen and the bottom right is cut off.

I have had this problem before. I dont have an ati card in this box (at work), but there should be an option somewhere (either on the display settings or on the ATI control center taskbar icon) that says something about "virtual desktop". Turn it off.

You've installed ATI Control Panels, right? Go to your display properties, Settings, Advanced. Go to the Displays tab (may have a different name on the radeon 7000, explore). Click on the name of your monitor and it will bring up Monitor Properties. There's a large blue button you can uncheck, that says "Use DDC information." When you uncheck it, you can now specify your monitor's maximum resolution. My guess is it's currently showing 1024x768. When you uncheck it, it will allow your monitor to display the higher modes, up to the resolution you select.
