ATI Radeon? X850 XT 256MB AGP Video Card ANY GOOD??

Im thinking of getting new video card ... i have an ATI card and i would like to buy ATI .. not nvidia .... I found ATI Radeon? X850 XT 256MB AGP Video Card for 350 dollars from a GREAT SITE!!! Im thinking of getting it ???



is this card good?
Oh yea and i need to buy new power supply on the same site i found Thermatalke TR2 W0070RUC 430W Dual Fan Power Supply would that work with the card?

It's more or less the best ATI has right now, you don't want nVidia and the price is decent, for that card, so sure, it's good.

And yeah, that PSU should be fine.

right now all i saw was an x800 and some x2....i wont label it as pwned yet....

Back to the x850xt, I love it, runs everything REALLY well to say the least. Makes doom run like a hot knife through butter, hl2 is great, and so is bf2. Its nice to be able to max settings, drives me nuts when I can't. Seems to be a good stock cooler on the card too, better than most stock i have had anyways

$350 is too much for an x850 xt pe. I would seriously look for a better deal. The ATI Store had a sale on refurbished x800 xt pe cards with three year warranties for $229. My cost was $233.16 once I applied the 5% discount and the shipping cost. The x800 xt pe is only 20 MHz slower than the x850 xt pe. BTW. The card I received looked like it was brand new and a three year warranty is better than the standard one year for a retail boxed card.

$350 sounds too expensive to me when you can get an AGP XL for $260. I don't think the X850 will be 40% faster than the XL, so you're paying a premium. Going one step further, an XL probably isn't generally 30% faster (see the same THG benchmarks) than the ~$200 X800P that jevans linked. I've also seen a used 6800GT for $230, a good deal provided you buy from a trusted source, and probably 15% faster, on average, than a X80P.

I'm just not sure I'd recommend spending over $300 on SM2 tech this close to ATI's SM3 lineup and nV's top-to-bottom second-gen SM3 lineup. It's even harder to see how a $350 X850XT is a good deal when compared to a faster, more fully-featured (SM3), and comparably-priced (~$390) 7800 GT. Admittedly, the 7800s are PCIe and you're looking for AGP, but I still think it's a valid comparison in terms of performance.

So I'd recommend the cheaper X800 XL or Pro, and you can use that $100-150 you saved for a faster, SM3 card in 6-12 months.

Dunno about Thermaltake PSUs. 18A on the 12V rail seems a little weak for a PCIe-specced PSU, considering the http://www.antec.com/specs/true330_spe.html]Antec TruePower 330[/url]'s 22A 12V rail, but it'll probably be more than sufficient for your PC. The Tt's push-pull dual 80mm fans and minimal vents looks to be a good airflow design--better than the Antec TP330's perpendicular fans, in any case. (I found the TP330 didn't evacuate hot air from my case very well, as it had too many vents and the more powerful 92mm fan likely pushed the hot air from the CPU back into the case via those vents faster than the 80mm fan could expel it. The TP330 raised my case and CPU temps by a few degrees over my single-fan SmartPower 300.)

What PSU do you currently have? You sure you need a new one?

Hmm...I'm an ATI fan and I think they REALLY need SM 3.0. (R520) People have been saying it makes NO difference, some people say it's a huge difference. If you look it up STRAIGHT from the make itself, you'll see SM 3.0. is a HUGE increase from SM 2.0.

Numbers as big as 96 (SM 2.0) compared to 65,535 (SM 3.0) for shader length obviously has a huge increase. Other features listed in the link provide shader anti-aliasing, only available in SM 3.0, and not supported in SM 2.0. I think SM 3.0 is a very big step up, even if no ATI card has it yet (which it will; R520) The X850 XT/XT PE are great cards because of the core speeds and just basically overall performance.

Hans preaches as if SM3.0 is the end all reason not to buy ATI currently. Almost every post he has made in this forum is regarding SM3 and telling people to not buy ATI because of it. Rediculous. I own a G256,Gf3, Gf 6800GT and have considered buying a GTX, i also own a 9700pro and X850XT. I have NO bias between companies like many on here.
It will be awhile before SM3 is in full force. Buy for todays needs. That said, for 300 bucks the X850XT is the best card. For 400 the 7800GT is 500, GTX. 250, i'd say the XL or 6800GT if you can find the 6800gt for that price, 200 bucks, i'D say the X800Pro.

The card is great. I have the PE and I run everything on max. The graphics never cease to amaze me . You will be happy with the card. However, I think I may have spent too much on it(~360) although I did get it about a month ago. I'd probably get something lower in the ATI line instead such as the X800XL or X800XT or go for the Nvidia 6800GT. They are all great cards as well that will do 80-95% of what a X850XT PE can do.
