If they had the $6 billion+ they wasted on ATI they would be doing just fine. They could have even kept their fabs. :|
I don't think either of those is the core problem. The problem is AMD was apparently having a drunken party after the Athlon 64 came out and then forgot to develop any new products after that.
I don't disagree that buying ATI was a likely poor move or that Intel turning around quickly hurt, but neither of those would have been as detrimental if they hadn't been trying to milk their one hit for all its worth.
I have to blame AMD management for failing to capitalize on their success.
