Ah Punisher, you should have seen my pearl white over gold lacquer, black vinyl roof 72 Monte Carlo. Crager SSs, Formula 1 Super Stock 60s/70s, hood tach, bored 350 with Edelbrock Tarantula high rise/Holley with Holley electric race pump feeding it, headers, all the normal chrome/ignition stuff, shift kit on the transmission I forget the model of. In 1981, it was quite the machine and attracted all the police.

It was no Goat though- only aspired to be.

Nvidia primarily pimps the games they do poorly on. Note the TWIMTBP logo on many games where ATI cards are superior, like UT2k4

Well, it will probably be on HL2 if it ever gets released! LOL

GTO's? Goat's? Are we talking Pontiac and muscle cars in the same sentence? Back in "the day" we all referred to them as "lead sleds". Next we're going to hear about the Olds 442...

Long live the Nova/ChevyII smallblock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that brings back some memories of being under a car with my mullet (I'll admit it) in rear end fluid. Ever tried to wash that smell out of your hair? Ugh...

Oh yeah. I had a mullet, a Camaro, and plenty of Def Leppard, AC/DC, and Judas Priest. Wore sleeveless shirts too.

Is Theif 3 just as badly unoptimized as DX2?

NO! Thief - Deadly Shadows is much less of a resource hog than DeuSex II ,. . . and looks just as nice . . . bloom is "special" . . . i.e. i can (barely) run DE at 10x7 where Thief runs 11x8 with higher detail and AA/AF (of course there isn't a lot of "action" on the Thief screen as it is a "sneaker") - this is with a Radeon 9800XT.

i think what we wills ee happen here is a bit like between intel and AMD.
AMD launch x86-64 and intel go round rubbishing it and downlplaying the importance. the industry knows the score and intel find themselves in a corner. what happens, all of a sudden, we have EM64T, and 64 bit x86 is good again ( yes, i know they have itanium!! ).

the same will happen with SLI, ati knock it now, yet willl have it on r5xx.

I don't know where you got the idea that I was a fanboi anyway. Perhaps I should "upgrade" from my 6800 GT to a 9800 XT. LOLZ.

If anything, HL2 will be a TWIMTBP game as it has better performance on x800 cards. Of course, its not like the logos matter anyway, do they?

Last time i checked the 6800U was within 5% of the X800XT... in which case you can be like OMG +3FPS THIS IS SOOOOO FUN! ITS NOT ABOUT THE STORYLINE!

LT my apologies. I had forgotten you have a 6800GT, based my response off your avatar and claim that nVidia mainly pimps games they are "inferior" at.

I wouldn't personally say nVidia is "inferior" at UT.

I dont see this being possible as it wouldnt allow for any other PCI-E devices in a SLI PC.

I would imagine that NF4 will just break the spec and support more than 24 lanes in order to accomodate 2 graphics cards and additional PCI-E devices.

Hmmmm...Well why dont they just put 8 lanes on both slots? - its not like having 16 lanes is going to give (or take) a significant amount of performance (if any). Or, if running SLI takes more bandwidth (as I would imagine), then put 10 lanes of each with 4 (or more) to do whatever they want.

I would imagine that the Goat only drives well in a straight line too. I have not heard great things about the handling prowess of muscle cards. They are impressive machines though, and I would have no issues driving one.

Anyhow, is the GTO the reason Rollo always asks people if they would "rather ride a goat or a donkey"?

Ben, I thought that Halo was also plagued by DX9's inefficiency, with way too many driver calls limiting actual performance. (I'm pretty sure a Bungie dev said this, possibly in response to please for that last patch that they said was ready to go and waiting for MS' approval. Did they ever release it?) I don't know if this DX inefficiency plagues all effects-laden DX games or just some, though.

Last I heard, nV will in fact just "distribute" PEG's 16 lanes between two cards in SLI by using a switch to give each card the equivalent of PCIe x8. That leaves 8 lanes for "regular" cards. It's doubtful PCIe x8 will be a big limit on the cards, anyway.

If the Nvidia CK8-04 chipset is indeed the next "Nforce 4" chipset, here is what Anandtech found about it:

CrushedK8-04 will come in three flavors, CK8-04 SLI, CK8-04 Ultra and CK8-04.

Vanilla flavored CK8-04 is very much the same as nForce3 250Gb, with the addition of 7.1 high definition audio and PCI Express. We also get four SATA 150 ports. RAID, 10 USB ports. Gigabit Ethernet and a hardware firewall.

The Ultra revision makes things a little more interesting; offering SATA 3Gb/s and an obscure device called the Secure Networking Processor. NVIDIA claims the "processor" enhances networking security, reduces CPU overhead and contains specialized features that defend against hacker attacks.

Finally, the SLI version of CK8-04 ties everything together with an additional switching PEG solution. Even though the CK8-04 only supports 20 PCIe lanes, NVIDIA's elegant graphic solution runs 16 lanes into what appears to be a separate switching bridge chip. This bridge can be electrically configured to either run all 16 lanes to one PEG interface, or 8 lanes to two PEG interfaces.

I don't really care to partake in the pissing match, but I'd just like to point out that STALKER will probably do well on the NV cards. At E3 this year it was one of the games NV was pimping. In fact they gave me a STALKER tshirt with a big NV logo on it.

It was just an example. Noone knows for STALKER AFAIK.I just mentioned it because NV30 seems to have problems with shadow intensive games. As for the E3 pimping should I remind you UT2004?

PS: I stop here because I'm starting to hear like a fanatic...

I'm not sure what this and a couple of comments after yours means. There is 10fps difference from an X800XTPE and a 6800GT at 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF, or about $10 a frame. 3fps seperating the PE from a 6800UE. 4fps seperating the XT from the Ultra, and 1.3fps seperating the Pro and the GT. If the performance of the 6800s are bad, then the x800 can't really be considered good either.

Perhaps I should have stated that they weren't pimping the NV30s at this years E3. Heck, the difference between a 9800XT and 5950U is 2.5fps. Anyways, I still think NV40s will do well in STALKER. I can't imagine NV promoting a game where it cant compete with the competition.

gonna take some getting used to these forum "upgrades"

Anyway, Stalker shows a lot of promise fro the nVidia Cards
With FSAA and AF enabled, NVIDIA?s graphics cards look unsure, as we?ve seen a number of times, since their algorithms of working with the memory are less efficient. No wonder the RADEON X800 XT is at the level of the GeForce 6800 Ultra here, and the RADEON X800 Pro easily beats the GeForce 6800, competing on equal terms with the 16-pipelined GeForce 6800 GT. As for the advantages of NVIDIA?s new architecture, you can see them in the example of the GeForce 6800, although the RADEON 9800 XT is very close to it in the 1600x1200 resolution.

More Stalker benchs (9800/x800/6800s/GF fx)
The situation changes in the predictable direction in the ?eye candy? mode. The RADEON X800 XT bears the higher load easily, and the RADEON X800 Pro can even catch up with the GeForce 6800 GT. The GeForce 6800 once again gives up the fight with the RADEON X800 family. The GeForce FX graphics cards also lose their advantage here.

No. I'm paraphrasing my old buddy, BFG10K.

When we were arguing about some benchmarks at 16X12 4X8X were relevant because both cards were below playable levels, he said my logic sucked and used an analogy like "What would you rather travel in - a hot air balloon or a glider? They're both slow, but one is faster."

Check yet again, looks like 11-12% and 15-16%.
Thats the more expensive Ultra Extreme, not the Ultra.

Apology accepted.

In any case, looking at the xbit benchmarks, it looks like one of the few games the x800 Pro can beat the GT by a reasonable margin. The GT does offer playable 16x12 4x/8x though, so it is a moot point.
