ATI video card drivers

Is there anyway to completely disable AA/AF like you can with nvidia control panel?

Also, is it possible that the vid card can have better performance with older drivers, say the drivers on the CD that comes with the video card? The only PC game my bro plays is CS 1.6. So all these new drivers really aren't doing anything for CS 1.6, right?

Could they perhaps be making it worse for CS 1.6?

As to your first question, no, you can't force disable those features off in the current drivers but you can using the RadeonPro profile application. This may be possible using the configurable application profiles coming in the Catalyst 12.1 drivers.

As for your second point, while theoretically possible, this is unlikely. You should always use the latest drivers, unless you have a very good reason for not doing so. Keep in mind that GPU acceleration is becoming more common for applications other than games (your web browser is GPU-accelerated so that it doesn't have to waste CPU time rendering the page) and is disabled if you use older drivers.

Yeah, tried that. Didn't know how to do that ingame with CS 1.6. But I finally found some topics on the internet with some console commands for it. Didn't really help none.

He had a 9400GT playing at 1024x768. Now he has a 6570 playing at 1440x900. I guess I just underestimated the jump up to widescreen 1440x900 resolution. He can play with 100fps in gun fire no problems, takes about 5 smokes for the fps to drop. I thought since it is such an old game, that he would be able to stand in more smokes.

I have a GTS 250, so I probably also tried to compare the two cards too equally.

Yeah, I'm going to his house tomorrow and going to give ATT a try. Unfortunately I can't refund the 6570 (for a gts 250 512mb) since I cut out the UPC code on the box for the rebate.

ATT worked a bit better.

I put my GTS 250 in his comp just for the heck of it since he plays at way higher resolution than me and the performance was pretty much the same at the same video settings. He was able to stand in like one or two more smokes.

That surprised me, I thought the GTS 250 was a lot better than the 6570?

Nope, they're pretty comparable cards. The GTS 250 has ~10% more memory bandwidth and double the ROPs, but it's still a very old card.

The GTS250 is a 9800GTX+ (which is in turn a tiny bit faster than the 8800GTX/9800GTX). The 6570* is between 3870 and 8800GT.

So you might find some older benchmarks with these cards and compare.

*GDDR5 version. The DDR3 version is more like a 3850 or a 8800GS.

Yeah I know the GTS 250 was a rebranded 9800GTX+. It looks like you're right about the cards though. Looking up some 9800GTX+ benchmarks and the 8800GT and 3870 aren't too far behind the 9800GTX+. Somewhere between 5-15 fps on whatever game and resolutions.

The 6570 is the DDR3 version, so it does look like he should be getting a bit better performance. But whatever. He'll live.
