What is the £@%"# problem with this ATI card? I'll be playing my game, and suddenly the game freezes, and a dialog box from windows comes up: "ATI VPU RECOVER HAS HALTED YOUR VIDEO CARD" or something to that effect... how do I fix it? I am so enourmously aggravated by it, never had this problem with my geforce3 =(

If you turn off VPU recover, then when the game crashes you'll have to hit the reset button on your pc instead of clicking OK to a message box.

It's garbage. Sometimes it actually makes a game crash. Try disabling it through your advanced tab in display and see if your problem is solved. If not, then you have some serious issues.

i have this 'vpu recover has reset your graphics accelerator..' blabla also, since today
i had it even 7 or 8 times already since (in 2 hours!)
i installed ATI catalyst 5.6 and later 5.5 and 5.6 again in an attempt to solve it, but no use

it occured the first time while playing a game (Enemy territory)
but it happens also when i'm only launching the game, and even when no game is running or being launched

one thing i also noticed: since i have this vpu thing occuring, some popups are not showing all letters anymore, so it's rather anoying there also cuz i cannot read half the sentences anymore

pls help me
thx

specs:
P4 HT
512 ram
ATI 9800 Pro 128

what do i need to do here?

It's really simple. Right click on your desktop, go to properties. Go to the settings tab and the advanced button. Go to the VPU Recover tab and uncheck VPU recover.

I have a feeling its overheating even if it's not overclocked. My first Radeon 9800PRO had a lot of D3D stuttering when I first got it but ATI wouldn't RMA it for me so I was stuck with what I had.. Well the card was always funky as I remember it and a year later the card just started to overheat all the time (even when not playing games). I would have the computer on for a while, I'm at the desktop doing normal stuff and I would start to get display corruption despite not having played a game prior/overclocking it.

RMA'ed it, got a replacement card and now not only do I not get D3D stuttering anymore, it runs completely stable and haven't gotten a VPU recovery since (had a few before it officially was overheating).

I've had my 9800 Pro for over 18 months and it has never crashed. My friend has had his 9800 Pro for 11 months and his has never crashed either.

Are you sure it's not overheating? They run hot.

I have pretty much the same problem, but mine will VPU recover or lockup or reboot randomly just in Windows. My 9700pro worked fine for 6 months, then started having major problems. I called to tech support (cost me $50, too, cause Canda was "international" in my AT&T calling plan) and they couldn't figure it out. They had me go thru the same doc as posted below.

So I RMA'd the card and stuck in my NVidia Quardo. What a relief. No more random reboots, locks up, etc. So I get a 9800 PRo back from RMA. All excited - stick it in my machine thinking everything will be great, and within the first few hours, I bet I had rebooted my machine 3-4 times because of lock ups.

So apparently my machine doesn't like ATI cards. I'm actually building a new AMD64 system with PCI-e and I've just picked up an BBA x800xl. I really hope I don't run into those problem again. I gave my 9800Pro to my friend to test in his machine, but he hasn't had a chance yet.

But anyway, OP, I feel your pain.

Actually, if you guys happen to use a VIA chipset, there's a big rumour going around that there's a bug in VIA's chipset regarding AGP 8x/4x. More information can be found in the forums of Via Arena (http://www.viaarena.com). I'm also victim myself of this problem with random crashes during DirectX games, but NEVER during OpenGL games. I'll sell my MB and graphics card and get the next generation stuff when they come out. That is, with PCI-E.

Its entirely possible they "fixed" the card you sent them and they sent it back instead of them replacing it. It's also possible but rare, where the new card is also defective as well. E-mail? You don't have to use phone ya know...

No VIA chipset for me - I have the Sis645.

I sent in a 9700Pro and they sent back a 9800Pro.

Obviously, I didn't know Canada was internatinal to my AT&T calling plan or I wouldn't have sat on hold for 40 minutes waiting for the 10 minutes I actually talked to a rep. At more than a buck a minute, that's insane.

But does ATI have email support? I don't know how they could have walked me thru all of the stuff (via email) the guy had me doing for 10 minutes on the phone.

sorry guys, but i would not know the temp if tried
i've searched in the past for mobo-monitors but did not find any

how can i check the temperature?

btw: i bought this card in nov2003, no problem with it before, until yesterday that vpu recover thing turned up

edit: OK found now Speedfan, and it shows the following info:
- fan 1 - 2 - 3 : 0 RPM ????
- temp1 : 37C
- temp2 : 128C !!!!!!
- temp3 : 3C
- HD0 : 47C
- temp1 : 40C

that 128C looks bad imo!!!
that 0 RPM looks even more bad imo
have the fan visually checked: it is running though...???
