I have been looking for weeks and the Egg has yet to replenish. Last night I ordered an Open Box unit for $159....but I am a little worried about this order. I have seen only a few on eBay and they are close to retail. Tom's website says that prices are pushing back up to $200. I need a darn good card for under $175. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the FS forums. In a few days there might be an X1900 XT 512MB there...*wink* *wink*

Sadly, it looks like the x1950xt's are disappearing. It seems like the industry in general has adopted a business model where it immediately halts production of older chips (CPUs, GPUs) almost immediately when the new ones are available in order to prevent having a stock of older chips that are less valuable and that sell at lower prices. It sucks if you're a value-upgrader.

You could consider the 512 MB "x1950xt" from GeCube (at the 'Egg) but based on user reviews, the stock memory speed is underclocked for some reason.

What you might want to do is to hunt around and see if you can find a x1950 Pro for, say, $125. Check eWiz.com.

Well, yeah, but the problem is that people place far, far too high of a value on used equipment in unknown condition that might be for sale as a result of its being a poor overclocker. It would be more interesting if the used equipment sold for 60% the price of purchasing it new, but sadly, eBidiots often drive the prices up to above the price of new. The same goes for the prices people ask for at Anandtech FS/FT.

I read that the x1950pro 512 is still not as good as the x1950xt. Which is why I have avoided that one. I ordered the open box last night and I see today they are gone. I figure they give you 15 days to try it. At least if it is DOA I can return it....which I can't do buying one used in FS/FT or eBay.

If you are going to spend near $180 for 256mb X1950XT, might as well get 8800GTS 320 for $250. $180 is a good price for 512mb X1950XT. But those are nowhere to be found at this price. X1950Pro 256mb is a pretty good value at $120 though.

With that point, do I go ahead and order an 8800GTS or wait until the next round or cards come out? I have a feeling I will have to updrade my power for the 8800GTS too. When does the madness end

lolz. for some reason I was fooled into thinking that $120 AR card was from gecube. No wonder why I couldnt find it! maybe this is a whole new deal, whatever.
Are HIS rebates supposed to be reliable? the newegg user review on the first page says that you must keep the packing slip.

I agree with eBay for the most part. I saw an X1900 XTX go for $210 there a few weeks ago...yeah, great deal, morons. On the other hand, if you know where to look you can get spectacular deals. I got an X850 XT off eBay for $62 shipped a few months ago. You have to find the posters that forget to add one crucial word in the description (for example, they write "ATI X850XT" instead of "ATI Radeon X850XT"). Vague postings, great deals.

On the other hand, a lot of things on the FS forums are overpriced because people expect buyers to haggle so they pad the price. Although I did see an X1950 XTX go off the FS forums for $250 just a week or two ago...ridiculous.

P.S. Good dealers on the FS forums will test everything they sell and give a description of what condition the item is in. They will also disclose everything about the item, including overclocks. I've been seeing a lot of "I've never overclocked this chip" bullsh*t in the FS forums, though, so maybe some of the sellers there aren't as scrupulous as they'd like us to think...

Okay, looking for some guidance here. I just ordered a Dell Vostro 400 last week with a E6550, 2GB 800 MHZ ram, and a crappy vid card. I was going to go with a x1950xt (I have the open box for $160 ordered) and then add 2 more GB of ram for about $80.

Do I put all my money in the 8800GTS instead and pass up the extra ram for now?

I appreciate all the help so far.

I recommend keeping the X1950 XT, waiting for the new cards to come out, and upgrading after that. 8800GTS prices will be lower, too. In addition, unless you're doing some heavy-duty stuff I wouldn't bother going up to 4GB of RAM; 2GB should be enough.

Heh. I could swear that I saw some over there for about $125-130 before shipping. Maybe it was someplace else.

I'm planning to wait until the new GPUs are released and hope that they put significant downward pressure on the other cards unless I can find an excellent value somewhere.

What kind of performance are you looking for in the games that will be released over the next 1-2 years? Is it necessary to run the games at 1600 x 1200 (or some higher resolution) with max details and max AA/AF or would you be content to play at 1024 x 768 and medium or medium-high details? What are max resolution, high frame rates, and highest detail settings worth to you?

I would bet that the x1950xt, if it works properly, etc., would be a fine card for 1024 x 768 at medium details for the next couple years. Of course, if you demand the absolute best then you're just going to have to pay for it and upgrade every couple years. If it were me, obviously, I'd be happy with the x1950xt and would go with the 2 GB of RAM, but that's just me. I'm poor and I don't like spending gobs of money on technology products that will quickly lose their value. I'd rather spend less money on a product that will quickly lose it's value, so for me, I'd much prefer to keep my video card expenditures to below $200 if possible. (A little under two years ago I picked up one of those Connect3D Radeon x800 GTO's for $137 AR after shipping and unlocked it to 16 pipes and overclocked it to x800xt speeds, now that was a deal at the time.)

I really do think that some people get too caught up in the need to have the best eye candy at the highest possible resolutions (what the heck is wrong with 1024 x 768?) when what's really important is the quality of the game play. What good is a game that looks wonderful but isn't much fun? Heck, I know a community of people who are wild about the original Unreal Tournament (the one released in 1999). They play it semi-competitively every night even though the graphics are awful compared to newer games because the quality of the online multiplayer game play is still superb. They could play newer and more demanding games, but they prefer to play a better game over a lesser game with better graphics (like, ahem, in their view, the newer Unreal Tournament 2004).

I'm not a Ebay booster by anymeans, but as mentioned above if one looks very carefully you may find a few gems.

ppl will do thing like list a card as X1800XL clocked at 500/500 with a 3Dmark 05 score of say 7000 or so.

but when you look closely and check the pics, ask questions, and check the specs you will find a X1800 Crossfire clocked at 625 core/720 memory that scores 9000 or so in 3Dmark 05, for for $115.-$120.

Now this is by no means a X1950XT, but it surely is a useable and pretty fast card to have as a stand-in till the new cards are out and prices can drop to a resonable level.

As a suggestion only..if you just can't spend more than $120. try this in a search: RADEON X1800 XL and see what you come up with.

maybe this will help someone here..... BTW mine is running @655/800 just using ATI Tray Tools to OC..

that might help someone here, but the OP specifically asked about the x1950xt.

GoBucks2007, I agree with laminator. keep the open box x1950xt. If you like the performance, keep it a long time. If it is just so-so in your games then upgrade when the 2950pro and/or g92 come out in Q1 08. I was originally planning to keep my x1950xt 6 mos and then upgrade in Q1, but now I like my card so much that I might keep it a little bit longer. It is so much better than my old 7600 gt that I'm still in shock. Of course, I could probably get a better 3dmark06 score on a 2950 pro...

Also, let us know how that open box card turns out - I was going to pull the trigger there but I was afraid of the open box stigma.

Will do. I figured I have 15 days to try it out and it it doesn't work...then back it goes.
