ATI X800 XL

I have a ATI X800XL and I am just beginning to test it. So far I ran 3dmark last night and it didnt seem as fast as it should. Got mid 4000 or so. Any advice on testing it and how are the ATI cards overclocked?

The only difference between the XL and its bigger brothers is that the clockspeed and mem speeds were significantly reduced, resulting in your "low" score. It should still perform exceptionally well at stock in everything out there, but it should also scale nicely in performance as well if you give it a bit of an overclock. Actually, it's built on the new .11 micron process, is it not? Are all the x850 cards built on that, or is that just the x800 XL and non pro? It should have some room to overclock if it's on a .11 micron process.

AFAIK, just the XL and NP. Apparently the 110nm cores had issues hitting really high clock speeds, so overclocks might not be as dramatic as expected.

Watch out for the ASUS X800XL with only 700mhz memory..... supposed to be 1Ghz.

Not to hijack the thread, but why is it that the recent ASUS x800 and 6800 variants all look like there was a mistake at the factory, i.e. the GT with NU ram and the NU with GT ram? They used to be a great company, now their video cards make no sense.

Back to the point at hand, I agree with Matthias, I doubt the new .11's are going to scale up to x850XT speeds like most people would like to hope, just take it slow and steady if you are going to O/C, or better yet let some more experienced O/C'ers take the plunge and report back before you try and squeeze some more of those oh-so-meaningful 3DMarks out of it. Just bench it on the big 3 (FC, D3, HL2) if you can, just to make sure it's working properly, then sit back and enjoy your more than adequate card.

It is 3dmark 05. And I paid 380 something for it. Yeah I know more then it retails for but it was still a bit cheaper then a 6800XT and is supposed to be a touch faster. I am going to play some with overclocking it, As for aa or af on 3dmark controls that issue.

i dont understand the performance difference between the, x800 regular, x800pro, x800xl, x800xt, x800xtpe, x850xt, and x850xtpe. they all seem to be almost the same. y cant they just have three, in each Xx00 line, low in that line, mid, and high?

I have my card tweaked to mem clcok 514 and mem at 415 and I am now getting 3dmark05 of 4775. I think I should be getting a bit better then this but not sure. Anyone else have results with this card?

Yeah maybe offering that many different products at such close speeds is confusing for the consumer.

X800 = 400/700 clock speeds 12 pipelines => think of it as replacement for X700XT (which replaced 9800Pro/XT) - this card is a direct competitor to 6600GT/6800nu. However, it only comes with 128mb of ram for $199 US MSRP, and 256mb card costs $249. However, it's availability is questionable. Only comes in PCIe. If you already have a 9800Pro, this isnt worth of an upgrade. Now add to that a higher price for PCIe boards and this whole "need to upgrade to PCIe ASAP" isn't necessarily going to save money due to extended upgrade path (but you'll end up paying $50 more for a motherboard, $100 more for the videocard).

X800Pro = 475/900 => 12 pixel pipelines - supposed to compete with 6800GT but right now costs more than a 6800GT and loses to it. Comes in PCIe and AGP but it's worthless considering 6800GT.

X800XL => 400/1000 replacement to X800Pro => 16 pipelines, it pretty much matches 6800GT (i'd say 5-10% slower), but it only comes in PCIe, making it an impossible upgrade for AGP crowd at least for now. It's also overpriced by $100+ over MSRP making it a bad deal.

X800XT = 500/1000 with 16 pipelines => basically starting with this card and cards below, this is faster than 6800Ultra. It can be had for $450US making it a "bargain" compared to X800XTPE/X850XTPE given that it's only slower by 10-15%. These cards can be found with 1.6ns memory (ie. Sapphire), making it essentially a X800XT PE given the 20mhz overclock on the GPu is guarantted and GDDR3 can easily gain 100mhz more.

X800XT PE = 520/1120 with 16 pipes => as you can see same as above but 20mhz faster core (4%) and 120mhz faster memory (12%). It costs roughly $520 making it simply bragging rights over X800XT.

X850XT => 520/1080 with 16 pipes => so falls between x800xt and x800xt pe. only comes in PCIe.

X850XT PE => 540/1180 with 16 pipes => top of the range.

One major disadvantage for PCIe users right now is that 6800GT PCI is around $440 and X800XL is $420 when X800XT AGP beats them both and can be head for $450. Also 6800GT AGP is "only" $355.

Also, on the lower end X300/SE => but those cards just suck so no need to mention them.

What? You can get the XL for A LOT less than $420.

Id just like to know where people pull these numbers from. Lots of people think the XL isnt even out yet, as you can see there are at least one post per day on the subject. Then they think they are sky high priced. It just makes no sense to me.

The reason they think the price is sky high is that ATI has a MSRP of around 300.00 and has been listed in the few reviews I have seen for the X800XL. So anything over 300.00 seems high. I bought one because it was 60.00 or so cheaper then a 6800GT and some reviews showed it to be a touch faster in all but Doom3 testing.

They are becomming more available as well and the price is comming down some already. I just wish companies would not over charge the people willing to buy the brand new equipment and in some sense be testers for it.

Guys, thanks for pointing the price decrease. Like 2 days ago it was still $420. Even now when I search Pricewatch, only eWiz has it for $370. I am not sure why sites like GameVE do not show up. Anyways, that's good for the consumer that it is starting to come down in price. I would imagine 6800GT PCIe card would have to follow to remain competitive.
