Hello all, I am trying to decide between the X800XL or 6800GT, any suggestions? I am wondering which of these two video cards are quieter? Or does anyone know which company makes quieter video cards? Asus, MSI, EVGA, ATI..etc....Thank you for your suggestions

6800GT all the way. As for company...stay away from Gigabyte and MSI. eVGA and XFX are good in my opinion. As for quiet - stick a Zalman VF700 on which ever card you buy.

Search is there for a reason, this has been asked just yesterday... 6800GT if they are the same price or similar +$30-40. If not X800XL will do pretty good.

Oh, if Linux is important for you Nvidia is the way to go. If not ATi has great support for WinXP, better than Nvidia's IMO, at least with official driver support.

EDIT: Thanks XG creators we have great driver sets every Nvidia BETA release

X800XL since it will only be 1-3fps away from the GT in every bench and its cheaper, why not.

Get a Leadtek 6800Gt, as it is just as fast as an x800xl, BUT it has shader model 3.0, meaning it is more future proof than the x800xl.

Don't worry, my 6600gt works fine with WindowsXP with most any drivers, so don't take what McArra said to heart...it's really not much of a difference, if any.

well THIS time it will be more future-proof with SM3.0 because it's SM2.0 performance is equal or greater than that of the X800XL too. the 6800gt will run you $400 and the x800xl will run you $300. is the 6800gt worth the extra $100? it depends on what you plan on doing. if you're buying another new card in the next 2 years, then it's not worth it. keep in mind the x800xl are 6800gt neck-and-neck on performance though. the 6800gt has the slight performance edge (about 5%). as for drivers...

'more often' releases doesn't always mean better. I know this because I also have an ATI Radeon 9500 PRO machine going for 2+ years. It's not a huge deal, but I think nVidia's drivers are a little better.

6800GT and X800XL are equivalent in speed, but the X800XL lacks SM3.0. Since SM3.0 isn't really a "must have" feature, I would pick the X800XL and pocket the extra $$$.

Street price difference for people in CA is $50. That makes the recommendation tougher. Even tougher considering you can get a used 6800GT AGP for $300 now.

NVidia also has better video playback quality than ATI now with the 6800 series.

Ok, I'm looking at about $80 difference for an XFX 6800gt and $100 for an eVGA one over here.

Playback of what? I've owned both and my actual CPU usage (WMVHD) is lower with an X800 Pro than it was with a 6800 OC. As far as picture quality goes, I saw no difference between the two cards.

Please qualify/backup your statement.

WOOWHO I HAVE SM3 GUYS LOOK. I own a 6800ultra and I have never used sm3 other than farcry.

Then you should sell it little pinguin. Haven't you played Sprinter Cell 3 demo? It's being released next week and is a sweet game and uses SM1.1 or 3.0 only....

Would a high profile link to an article at Anandtech suffice for you, Mr. "Lifer"?

Also, let me guess without looking at your system that you have........give me a moment......it's coming to me......an ATI video card. Just a WILD guess. How'd I do?

Defensive are we? Save it for a fanboy flamefest please. Just post the link, I've read most of the articles AT has published and I must have "missed" this bit of info.

And yes, you are right. I don't hide my gear like someone else appears to be doing. But as I said, I had both. Look which one I ended up sticking with.

I dont like Splinter Cell.

I would say SM3 is NOT worth 100 dollars. But hey, if it means all that much to you, thas great.,

I didn't like it till this version. Graphics are so sweet I cannot stop playing the demo...

EDIT: if you have a 6800U give it a try just to see the graphical environment.

You are the one who offered to post a link, right at the beginning of our discourse. And to think, all I wanted was some backup for your claim. I may have admitted to being wrong/out of date...
