Repost about four times over. Yes, retailers are gouging for these cards right now. You can get them elsewhere for ~$375-400 (1-2 weeks ago they were $500-600 everywhere), and in a few weeks they'll probably be down at MSRP ($300).

You obviously haven't taken a look at the 6800GT/Ultra PCI-E prices lately.

Seriously though, both ATI and Nvidia are equally guilty of this. 2004 will go down as the year of the paper launch, and this year seems to be no better yet.

I doubt Nvidia or ATI has sold a single board over MSRP.

You're right, I could have worded that better..."the problem affects cards with ATI and Nvidia chips equally", how about that?

Welcome to last week. Would you like me to show you a $950 PCI-E 6800U?

Nevermind the fact that ZZF has a X800XL for $409, do whatever you need to, to try and make ATi look bad.

You do have to be prepared to pay the price if you want something in short supply, and not just video cards. Vendors will charge what the market will bear. The price on X800XL's will drop like a rock if they hit in quantity, if not......

Newegg's specs list the Asus XL as having 700mhz DDR, Isn't that the same as the regular x800, I remember the XL having 1ghz ddr.

can't believe the PC component market is becoming like high end auto market... like you can't get a BMW M3 at MSRP. since when do ppl start willing to pay for PC components at mark-up price? looke at those high end video cards and nForce4 boards (now someone just please get me a DFI NF4 ultra at MSRP)

seeing how the x800xl is a little better than the x800pro in most instances, $400 is not a bad price to pay for it at all! of course, asus is always overpriced, but the sapphires and powercolors and soon BBA will come on the market and make that price even lower - then it will be a steal practically.

They'll let it go on short supply for sometime, let the consumers over-pay under the excuse that supply is short. Make some money profits I guess, and then it'll slowly go at $299.99. This is not a fact of course. I just presume they do have the resources and enough popularity to do that without getting bad complaints or results.

I finally ordered my X800 XL, but I know I'll regret the price I paid for it in no less than perhaps two or three months. I just couldn't wait.

And I know myself well enough...I'll need a server system after this upgrade, then I'll look for the next generation of GPUs from ATi, around May or August, in good enough supply. I hope.

You can find the ATI radeon x800 xl at Comp USA for $349 but they dont have any.
Also rumor has it that "retailers" will be getting the cards first.
