The GeForce4 was a new generation part; I distinctly remember the hype surrounding it.

Nope, it was a refresh- GF3=NV20, GF4=NV25. DX '8.1' support was smoke and mirrors as far as nV is concerned.

What is the importance of whether it is according-to-Hoyle a "refresh" or not? All that should matter is the performance, price, availability, and features the new card brings to the table.

What's the R500 again? Xbox360 GPU?? So...many...core...designs...

yes, but xBox360's GPU utilizes elements of r600.

So then which one is derived from which one? Are they each derived from each other? Are they both the same GPU maybe? :Q

Originally the R400 was going to be a unified architecture but ATi decided that there was no way to bring this architecture out at the time (.13, .11 processes). So what came out was the R420 (X800 generation) and the design was moved to R500 (work continued on it).

AFAIK The Xbox360 is based on this design R500.

So basically the Xbox360 is the R500 architecture but modified, with the onboard cache, northbridge functionality, etc.

The next generation GPU from ATi (R600) is also based on the same design but there are components of it that will never make it to PC cards like the onboard cache.

I'm not to clear on what derives from what exactly but AFAIK this chips been in the works since the R400.

Yeah, I think it's

R200 --> R300 -> R420 ---> R520 -> R580 (longer arrows very roughly indicate more improvements, AFAIK, IANAEE, etc., so R420 isn't advanced much beyond R300)

and

(R400) -> R500/Xenos/C1 -> R600 (tho it's probably more like both branched off of R400, rather than R600 followed R500)

I guess some tech was shared b/w the two lines since R400, but that's the basic split. R400 was never released, but apparently R500 and R600 will be the fruits of that labor. I'm guessing R520 got some R400 ju-ju, too.
