ATI's X1k midrange..

I'm a bit confused by the x1600 and x1300 series from ATI. based on benchmarks i've seen at AT and elsewhere, these cards are basically worthless. An x1600XT can't beat a 6600GT, and can't beat my x800pro. I'm thouroughly confused, as this leaves a massive gap in the current generation lineup. X1800 prices still too high to adequately fill this, but the previous gen X8 series do nicely (used cards of course, cause retails are insanely priced). Can anyone explain why ATI has left a gaping hole in their video card range?

I don't know. The X1800 cards are PCI-Express and you have AGP. Save up for a PCI-Express mobo and a card faster than your X800Pro.

I would recomend getting a PCIe motherboard, and then consider upgrading as cards for APG are being phased out

i can't afford to upgrade anymore. i just actually upgraded to a S754 sempron64 OC'ed to 2.0ghz and an X800pro (i'm very pleased with its performance). i'm just asking cause i expected the x1600 (the XT at least) to beat my x800pro

Isn't that how it usually has been? The midrange of the new generation never quite beats the highrange of the previous generation. If the prices are comparible, the only real incentive to get the midrange of a new generation is if it supports new technology.

The midrange of the next generation usually performs like the High end of the previous generation, in fact in most cases. Example, the midrange 6600GT of the Geforce 6 generation performed better than the high end Radeon 9800pro of the Geforce FX/ Radeon 9xxx generation. Same thing in this generation. The midrange Geforce 6800GS performs like or better than a high end 6800GT of the 6 generation(still the same generation, but still), depending on how the card is clocked. The midrange 9600pro of the 9xxx generation beat the High-End Nvidia Geforce 4 TI 4600 of the Geforce 4 generation.

The x1600xt is just fine now, with all the new drivers they have made huge performance increases. I think everyone is just used to seeing all of the launch benchies.

could you point me towards some benches with the newer catalyst drivers? i'm interested to see how the x1600XT stacks up against competition in its price range.
