ATITool unstable with nVidia cards?

Just set up my new rig, but I'm still using my 7900gtx for now. I wanted to OC it a bit to get a little more life out of this baby. I decided to use ATITool in the past with my x850xt and want to use it with this card.

After a modest OC (+25 core and +100 mem) which was supposedly stable for 8 hours in ATITool, I played a little Civ4. After about an hour of gaming the program closed up on me and a Microsoft message came up saying that the program caused an error and had to be shut down. No biggie, but after loading my last save point and playing for a few more minutes the same thing happened at generally the same spot in the game.

I thought it might be a software issue, except that while I was checking out the settings in ATITool, my folding@home client gave me the same error message that Civ did above and had to be shut down.

I decided to run some stability tests with nTune thinking it might be my new hardware now, and during the Perform Stability Test the exact same thing happened again.

The only common denominator I can think of is that ATITool was open during all of those instances so I could monitor the temps and clocks.

Does anybody know if it's a known issue for ATITool to cause system instability with a 7900gtx or nVidia cards in general?

I didn't know either until I read some of the overclocking posts in this forum so I gave it a try. Apprently, it works, but i guess not that well for me.

ATitool works fine with the rig in sig. It was orginally for ati cards only, but the developers later added nvidia support, the name just stuck because it was already popular.

However, rivatuner wont even install properly on vista64.

I'm thinking it might be folding@home now causing me some issues.

Tried opening a second Internet Explorer window with folding at home running and I got that error again.

I def think it is a software issue and not a hardware one now.

Any thoughts?

Up until a few weeks ago, I did not know rivatuner could be used with ATi cards. Me thinks its' time they change the names of their products.

I've used ATITool exclusively for my 7900GT KO and it has worked perfectly fine, including controlling 2D clocks, etc.

It will if you disable the driver integrity check during bootup using the F8 menu. You will have to do this for each session if you want it to load the RT driver.

Are you sure that your CPU and memory OCs are completely stable? You should run memtest and orthos b/c I use ATiTool for both my Vista and XP rigs and it has never caused problems. I have a 7300 running at 500/900 and a 7950GT running at 635/870. It could be your memory causing those errors. It could be a driver conflict, but I don't think it is. I always have ATiTool open for my 7300 on Vista and it has never caused any problems. I cannot use it on my XP 7950GT rig b/c I now use SLI, which it handily doesn't support OCing the secondary card.
