So, it looks like I'll probably be moving to Atlanta for a job later this summer.

Now the big question is, where? I've honestly spent all of three days in the city, and saw very little of it (due to interviews and such).

I'll be working near where 75 & 285 intersect north of the city.

I'm willing to deal with 20-30ish minute commutes. I'm 22, and I'd rather not live in suburbia yet. I'm looking at apartments/condos for rent, in nice areas that are walking distance to places to eat and so on. If possible, it'd be nice if it were near parks/bike trails and such.

Does anything like this exist nearish to vinings?

I lived in Minneapolis this past summer, and loved it because of my proximity to the city, bike trails and all the other fun stuff going on in and around the area, and I'm looking for something similar in Atlanta.

I think there's some places in the Roswell area that wouldn't be too bad for what you're looking for. And Roswell isn't too expensive either (it's a bit east of your work on 285). I live in Dunwoody myself, but seeing as I don't do anything involving bike trails I couldn't tell you anything about that.

It's good to be young with your head in the clouds.

I know you're a troll but... Not every day will the commute be 20-30 minutes, and I'm willing to deal with that. But on average, I'd prefer it to be in that range. I've dealt with it for 3 months before and I'm willing to deal with it longer. I'm not buying a house, this isn't even a semi-permanent residence.

What's your budget? Like most places, the more you spend, the nicer place you'll find.

It also matters when your commute is. If you're commuting during rush hour, 20-30 minutes is probably going to be a 10 mile radius in that area. I've lived 5 miles from my office in Dunwoody and it's been a 20-30 minute commute; now I'm 50 miles away but commute before rush hour and it's ~55 minutes.

I recommend looking in the Sandy Springs area as you'll 'mostly' be going against traffic. There's lots of apartments off of Ashford-Dunwoody (north-side of 285) along with lots of crap within walking distances of those apartments. Also, there are some pretty decent trails on the northside too within driving distance.

That's probably your best bet. Not a bad area either.

However in my experience if you want to get most places in Atlanta, you get in the car.

Really if you lived south of you work your commute will be a bit easier since most flow is from north to south in the AM and south to north in the PM.

75 and 285 is near Marietta which has some decent areas to live.

If you want night life and things to do though then you may want to consider renting in midtown or something of that nature and commuting to work but it'd be more than 20-30 mins more than likely on average. Buckhead might have some of what you're looking for also and be a bit closer.

Also Dunwoody isn't huge but has enough bars and things to do for a 20something I'd think.

And I live in Dunwoody and hang out there regularly. So let me know if you end up deciding on there. If you're social, I often hang at several of the bars and know many people in the area.

I won't know specifics on my budget until probably Friday or Monday, as I'm still waiting for official numbers.

I was kind of focusing on Dunwoody and Buckhead... although I've seen that Buckhead is a very weathly area, which might not be my favorite place to live (cost and otherwise).

I lived in The Woodlands (Woodlands Dr off of Village Parkway in Symrna) for about 7 years until 94. It was part of Lincoln properties that owned/managed all of the Post apartments, but did not have the premium $$$. Since it was off of 41 there near Windy Hill, it was convienent to everything. Not sure what it is like now, but was a good place for a long time.

Edit - now called

obligatory 'lol atlanta lol.'

one of the worst commuter cities in the country. you'll be luck if you can get your drive under 45 mins, probably more if you're actually going into downtown.

Actually due to our substandard mass transit, heavy population and traffic, and spread out population ... I believe we're actually considered the worst commuter city. But I'd rather live here than LA or New York anyday.

Living around Vinings will definitely get you near a great system of bike paths at the Chattahoochee River park right along 285 and Powers Ferry, plus there are a good bit of restaurants and a few bars in the area, but not within walking distance, for the most part.
Look around Powers Ferry Rd from 285 up to Terrell Mill. Many nice places to rent and they are practically begging for tenants, and you are within spitting distance of work. There are not many places within walking distance in this area, but then again, if you want walking, live in midtown.

Sandy Springs is a good option ( Roswell Rd N of 285 mostly) Has several bars up and down the road and many apts to rent and is only a few miles from where you will work.

I don't know if this would interest you, but in Atlanta proper you have Atlantic Station, which is trying to be a "one stop" type of community with walking distance to shops and entertainment being the focal point. Plus, you would be heading north to work and south home. Which would be the exact opposite of the crazies who live in traffic ( like my wife)

Hope this helps!

Peace
