So fuel can melt steel then? This happened last year near where I live. A truck ran into a bridge and the heat melted the steel beams so much they had to demolish the bridge and build a new one.

You don't have to get anywhere close to the melting temperature of steel to soften it enough to deform under the stress a bridge is under. Once you reach a hot enough temp, annealing starts to occur and the grains that make up the material begin to grow... the strength of the steel is in direct opposition to the grain size of the microstructure.
