The crazy part of all of this is that the probably $50-100 million that it will cost to fix would have paid for a lot of homeless shelters.

in ~ 15 years? No idea if he can build the machine he wants thats 10x faster as he claimed.

Elon Musk has some great ideas. But some are just impractical.

So was bringing the first stage of a rocket from freaking space and landing it vertically using its main engines on a barge bobbing in the ocean and then sending that very same first stage back into space and doing it all over again, both times actually delivering a payload to orbit...

That's quite an achievement. But not so much with his plan to colonize Mars, that's just stupid.

Bold thinkers often fail, but when they succeed, they propel the rest of us forward, skipping some intermediate steps. Colonizing Mars doesn't have to happen to be a useful project.

I actually like Elon Musk a lot and wish him can be POTUS.

But sometimes a genius sees the bigger pictures but lost the details, and those details can jeopardize a project or render a product completely useless.

Again, so was his plan to do what is now routine with his space launches, landings and reusing boosters.

When someone successfully pulls off some insane shit that everyone thought was stupid just a few years prior, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on the next insane idea. When he first introduced the idea most knew it would fail, on the first few attempts most said SEE it won't work and when he did finally land one they said it wouldn't fly again. Now he lands them so often that it's only news if one does crash, it's literally routine now.

Dude literally had most rocket scientists betting against him and he won so while I think he has an ambitious timeline I still ain't betting against him.

I really hope his boring machine can be a reality ASAP and make the cost of tunneling very cheap.

And THAT will be a tremendous achievement and might just solve the traffic problem around the world.

But maybe I'm too optimistic. Getting in & out of tunnels will be a big problem.

I hate driving through ATL and do everything I can to avoid it. Really feel bad for friends of mine who live in that traffic hell hole and now get stuck dealing with this for months.

I had to go there late last year for work. It was the worst traffic I have ever seen in my life (and I've lived in LA and Phoenix). I can't imagine what it's going to be like now. I'm a bit confused on how a fire did all this damage, but man, if it does take months for them to get back to the normal levels of jacked up traffic I don't want to go anywhere near there.

I think it's pretty funny that SoCal people used to tell me "You're from Atlanta. You don't know what real traffic is like!" and "What you call 'traffic' isn't even close to what we have to deal with." I got these comments when visiting San Diego and LA in 1994, again in 1998, and again in 2005. We got into bumper to bumper traffic once (border patrol checkpoint). I was always amazed that they could go to a grocery store <10 minutes away using a freeway, which is just unconscionable for most of metro Atlanta. If it isn't a surface-street away, you pretty much ain't gettin' there in under 20 mins.

The preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games did create a lot of extra capacity (after years of exacerbated delays during constructions), but all that did was encourage more commuting from further away until it was jammed again in a couple years.

I'm comvinced people who believe LA is the be-all end-all of traffic haven't travelled much.

They definitely haven't been on the I-95 corridor from Fredericksburg, VA to Rhode Island.

Atlanta is bad, but to me, other than I-95, Chicago's traffic is pure garbage.

Oh god: FUCK Fredericksburg, VA. fuck it to hell!
There are times where I'm able to drive 95/287 from New Haven to DC without stopping for a long time, but as soon as I get between Quantico and Fredericksburg, I'm stuck in a traffic jam for hours!

It's a CIA plot--I just know it!

anyway, something weird is going on in that Fredericksburg zone and I don't get it. It's possible that with the construction, and service vehicles periodically entering in the left lane, that this is creating those un-explainable traffic ripples: It's like wave after wave of rubbernecker effects in that area: no one really exiting or entering in significant numbers around there, no accidents--but always just periodic waves of stop and go for about 30 miles. I once thought that the DOT was sending out a wave of cars every ~30minutes or so just to slow down traffic as "Evidence" that they need more funding to fix traffic issues D), then I noticed the "service vehicles entering left lane" signs near there. So that is probably it.

....not normal situation, but when driving down to NC for X-Mas week last year, Thursday evening, it took us no less than 5 hours to get from DC to Richmond.

Had the misfortune of driving around the Eastern side of 285 yesterday.

Picked up a load from Covington, which was going to London, KY. Traffic between 20 and 75 was an absolute hell, add in the heavy rain yesterday... So many accidents.
