ATM ate my cash deposit.

A few hours ago I went to my local Citibank to make a cash deposit at the ATM for $500. The machine here takes cash deposits without an envelope. When the machine prompted me I inserted 50 $10 bills into the cash slot and waited. After about a minute or so the machine prompted that it had "problems with one or more of the bills" and proceeded to return my money. I could hear the machine clicking and paper crunching but no money ever came out. After about 3 minutes the ATM told me that my session has timed out and I was immediately logged out of my account. There was nothing I could do after that. I called my bank and they simply told me that they would launch an investigation and gave me a temporary $500 credit to my account. Does anyone know much about ATMs? Would a bystander be able to get the money out somehow? There were other people there so I was almost afraid to leave the machine. How long would it take the bank to inspect the machine? And would the cameras there be able to see me insert the money? I'm really worry that I won't get my money back.

Funny story, I went to the ATM, and wanted to get $20 out... well, after a few mins, out came a whole bunch of $10 bills... and lots of those bills had some kind of white powder on them. Really odd!

OP, yes, they have a optical scanner, and a pic of you using it, along with your account info.
They will be able to tell exactly how much is in it when they open it up, and look--though, if they will be honest about it is another story.

I had something similar happen at BoA
I thought my deposit didn't go through because it was stuck processing and made a lot of abnormal sounds. I couldn't even log out because it was stuck processing for more than 5 minutes. I called customer service and they luckily told me that it shows the deposit went through.

After this, I'm very careful with cash deposits now. Some ATMs need to be repaired.

I'm really afraid that the ATM will spit the money out later and someone else will grab it.

This happened to me with a large cash deposit. The machine froze right as it was about to print the receipt. I filled out a form in the bank and they said they would investigate (check the machine and the camera footage) and they would let me know.
I had the money in my account quickly.

I had the exact same thing happen at a BofA atm. Had just a wad of assorted bills, didn't even know the total lol. Got jammed, then the ATM was asking me how much I had put in. Took too long and it locked me out. I tried making another deposit to see if the slot would open again, but it just said not available at this atm.

Calculated it out to be $672, called CS and they did the same thing with the temp credit. Assured me my monies would be safe, the atm service dude wouldn't pocket the cash, and it would be counted and verified once the bank opens.

Once I deposited a check and it read it at like $72 instead of $720. Took like 6 weeks to fix and never got a temp money deposit. One of these days with cash it's not going to be trackakble or one dirty worker and you'll be out.

Depositing cash shouldn't be any worse than withdrawing. I've done it hundreds of times and this is the first time it has happened. Also my checks are printed so it never gets misread.

You should know better than to believe an atm. These are barely better than the vending machines of the 90s. I never feed more than 10 bills at once into those things and at least one comes back.

I worked at a bank, but before you didn't need an envelope. There should be at least two people present when the machine is opened, and at least one will be a bank employee if the other is an ATM repair man. At least that's how we did it. Plus, they will check the video footage if the money was not in there, which it should be. I wouldn't worry about it.
