Kinda drunk last night when I hit up the ATM for some cash. It's one of the units that keeps the card throughout the transaction and returns it once complete.

Well...I forgot to grab the card when it popped out. I'm walking away when I hear it beep at me. I run back to get it but I was too late. It went back into the machine.

Think I'll be able to get it back when the bank that hosts the ATM opens on Monday? Or should I call and cancel it now.

I drove off without my card once at the ATM. The bank called me up and left me a message. I went down to the bank, they had a big binder full of cards and found mine.

I pulled up to the ATM once, as the car infront of me was pulling away.. and the machine was sitting there asking me if I wanted to make another transaction. I thought about pushing yes for a moment, but then realized there were probably about 10 cameras on me. It timed out, and spit the card out.. so I took it, did my transaction, and then went inside the bank. The guy had just come in looking for his card, so I gave it to him.

It was my understanding that the ATM's (at least for the bank I use) shredded the cards when that happened... and they just issue a new one.

At least that's what I was told when an ATM "ate" my card once.

Well, probably because the guy is asking if he should go to the bank on Monday or cancel the card. If the OP thinks he needs to cancel the card, then he obviously thinks it might spit it back out when someone else is there, and is obvious that he doesn't know that all ATM's do this as a security feature.

Just to be safe I would call & cancel it ... the bank should be able to issue you a temp ATM card on monday & you'll have a replacement in about a week.

Which is why I prefer ATMs that require you remove your card before you can withdraw the money.

So you can't get your cash until you take your ATM card.

Why would he cancel it? ATMs are designed to keep your card if you don't take it within a certain timeframe of completing the transaction. If it's an ATM that shreds the card, then he'll be issued a new card with the same exact account # on it. If the ATM doesn't shred it, then the bank will give it back to him during business hours.

I don't understand the worry of your card being in an ATM. It's safer there than in your wallet most likely.

All the ATMs at my bank do this. It's to help stupid people not leave their card in the machine.

Alcohol got you into this mess, alcohol can get you out.

Go get a case of beer, a fifth of something to do shots with, a crowbar and a sledgehammer. Then after you are fortified, go back to the machine and get your card.

I know that's what I would do.

Thats great if he's 100% sure the card was eaten by the ATM & not grabbed ... 99% or less & in my opinion calling to cancel it is a no-brainer considering either way he'll have to wait to get a replacement card in the mail ... whats the downside?

Many ATMs in my area now have a card reader similar to the swipe-reader used for debit cards in retail locations & never have your card inside them at all.

ding ding ding.

Just got off the phone with the bank. They've confirmed my card was indeed in the machine, and that it was shredded about an hour ago.

Called my bank and confirmed. New card is in the mail.

You'd have to be some kind of special to forget your card in the machines that DON'T give you the card back until the transaction is over. I'm with Wachovia and every ATM of theirs that I've used has a ring of very bright flashing green LEDs to remind you get your card. Not to mention that it tells you on the screen, in addition to beeping at you.

When i used to work on ATM's i was pretty damn surprised that so many cards would end up in the little bin in there. They %99 get shredded up right away, sometimes the banks will ask us to return one to them. I would call and talk to them chances are its gone, but its worth a call.

*edit* sorry i didnt read the end of this post.
