I was thinking about replacing my old P3 file server with a better system but i hit a snag the Atom 330 cums with a 945 which is well u know... For the 1100 i can buy a better mobo like the ones based on AMD 6xx/7xx or the Nvidia 7025/7050.

SO wht do u think the overall difference will be in terms of power consumption of both systems?? Atom 330 is very good with low TDP but the 945 totally is a downer for me. Also out of curiosity there is a Zotac ION Atom 330 board also available its quite expensive but will it exhibit low power consumption as compared to the 945+atom 330??

Atom 330 might not be faster than the old P3.
And given the cost of atom systems, going for a mini-itx amd system is reasonable. With cool n' quiet, power consumption could go pretty low, or you could undervolt/underclock if your mobo has those capabilities. Using the 945 will basically even out power consumption between the two systems anyway.

The Ion should be lower; but even with the 945 power consumption isn't too high.

A Sempron system will have higher power consumption but perform much better. You can undervolt and even underclock the Sempron which will definitely bring down consumption. Not to the Atoms level but still very low consumption.

I've worked on and messed with Atom netbooks and they are dirt slow. I would much rather have a Via based cpu which actually has very nice power numbers.

Anyways, this is all my experience and opinion.

it's COMES. cums has... a very different meaning.

EDIT: I read the rest of your post... and... well... Get a dictionary and stop using shorthand. You is only two more letters than u. if you will not make the effort to form complete sentences, why should I make the effort of answering your questions?

bah, I am such a sucker I will anyways...
electricity savings are not gonna pay for the upgrade... but will the speed increase be worth it? the atom is SLIGHTLY BARELY faster than an old P3... and besides, its a file server, do you NEED it to be all that much faster?

I am sorry for using shorthand but most of my posts are done with a old Tc1100 and the virtual keyboard keeps a bit on my nerves.... extra hardware would compromise the relatively small size.

I was thinking of upgrading to saving electricity. Performance is not much needed but its surplus non the less. How low can the 1100 really go without any pencil mods ??

After crunching the numbers a 330+945 costs around same as a 1100/1150+7025 so only power consumption matters. Also the problem with current P3 is that it was hard to find cheap SD-RAM kit+M/B after my current RAM+M/B died...

BTW Via Nano motherboard seems not available here otherwise it would have made a good option.

Atom versus core 2 duo. Idle power results are about the same, but core 2 duo is higher under load, but way faster of course, and still fairly low.

I think a low power x2 (or core 2 duo) underclocked and undervolted to their lowest would outperform the atom while having comparable power draw. One company even made a smaller than netbook computer (think oqo size) using AMD integrated graphics and a dual core turion undervolted and underclocked to 800mhz, so it's possible. It was said to noticeably outperform atom systems however.

if you underclock a lima core sempron it should be pretty low power.

i have a 945gc + atom 330 and a 690G + 2650e lima 1.5ghz running at home. I think at idle they are probably about the same power use. the 2650e is a 15W tdp, but basically any lima core athlon / sempron can be made to just run at 1.5 ghz and it will also be 15W. the lima still feels faster than the atom 330.... , also no p3 will likely be as fast as an atom 330 except maybe a tualatin 1.2 or 1.4 ghz one.

I've been running a Foxconn Atom 330 for the last 3-months. It takes 53 Watts according to my Kill-A-Watt. That's w/o the monitor, but includes the router and ethernet powered wireless internet.

I suspect most of the power is in the 150W PSU, of unknown efficiency, that came with the Foxconn barebone.

I've been very impressed with the 330, it is my everyday computer. I have a 2GB DIMM and a 250GB HDD, running XP SP2. I'm also leery of the 945 IGP and I'm planning on the new Clarkdale CPU + IGP on a mini-ITX MB early next year.
