as to those who ask why use build a cable? there are many advantages. First, you can easily upgrade the remote to operate equipment that were not around when you bought the remote. Second, if you like macros, it is easier to program them via the computer, rather than through the remotes buttons. Third, you can easily change the buttons to wor with whatever device you want as opposed to the preassigned device selections like cable/sat vcr/dvd or whatever. Fourth, the memory for "learning" from remotes or macros is limited. Upgrading the remote using your computer allows you to do so using less of the remotes memory. Fifth, there is the techno geek factor of using your computer to upgrade the remote.

the thing lights up indiglo blue if it detects the room is dark.

I'm an idiot. I thought mine was broken b/c it was lighing up intermittently. Thanks for the heads up.

btw, The 2107 has very good learning functionality, I really don't know why you'd need to program it via JP1 cable. If you want it to perform a function, you can simply "teach" it the function with your old remote and map that function to any key.

I got the last one in Madison WI. Hehe.

Thanks for the POST Bonedoc .

The 2107 does have a JP1 connector!

List of JP1 enabled remotes

Ok, that being said, I don't see the benefit here unless you use up all your "Learning" memory. Looks like JP1 allows you to reshuffle everything and gives you access to memory you normally wouldn't have.

The 2107 keys cannot be remapped name-wise or position as they're "burnt-in" on the LCD. Only the functions can be changed (including putting fuctions in blank spaces which wouldn't even show a button).

Overall, I think I'm going to return one, and keep the other as a gift for my parents. I think they'll still end up using their TV remote for everyday stuff, and then this one during movie nights (easy to see with light up display, and I'll program a macro to turn on the TV, set it to the right Video setting, turn on the DVD, turn on the surround sound system, and another to get it back to tv and shut everything down). Parents.....they have a hard time programming the vcr much less figuring out the tv/dvd/surround sound.

I would like to answer a few of the questions that have been asked about the jp1 connector. I was lucky enough to find one today a 2107 that is. I am not going to have time to fiddle with this thing tonight but I have the 15-2104 that I have been using for a couple of weeks now.

First I made my cable out of spare parts I had laying around. I had a parallel printer extension cable that I cut the end that I didn't need off. Note there is a cable length limit I think it is 5 feet. I made mine about four. Then I took a serial port that plugs into a motherboard that I had laying around and cut the port off leaving a ten pin connector and flat ribbon cable. I removed 4 of the unneeded wires off of the flat cable. I then used Ohm meter and found the wires I needed on the parallel cable and soldered them together using the pin chart available in the yahoo group. Took me about a half hour and didn't cost anything. I did also have to take a dremel and trim the black connector back. You could also use a floppy or hard drive cable and saw off ten pins worth of connector and rip 6 wires off of the cable.

There are numerous things you can do with jp1. For instance you can use it to select the codes instead of punching in by the buttons on remote. Lets say you want to a vcr on aux1 and say you try to input the vcr code into the aux1 but the remote won't accept vcr on aux 1. You would be able to do it through the jp1. I took my dvd/home theater which in german and was no code available for it. I learned all of the buttons on the remote a few at a time then used the jp1 to bring them to the computer. After learning all of the keys I was able to build my own code. Say I assigned it to code 0200. I can then upload this to the remote and it stores it in the same memory as all of the other codes. If the battery goes and you lose your memory the codes may have to be reprogramed but code 0200 is still there. This makes it nice since there is only limited amout of memory for learned functions and macros.

There are extenders that make it so can assign any function to any button. It wouldn't surprise me if you can use it to change the labels of the lcd buttons. I don't think I am ready to jump into that yet but you never know.

I hope this answers a few questions.

On the phone with Radio Shack right now, YES they have the $5 off remote control coupons

Going there in a little bit.

Bad news - This is a yearly coupon book, $5 off remote control is not valid until NOVEMBER.

Screw it, I'm playing with my remote tonight.

It's like hacking into an assembly language with a front end interface, from what I can see. As for moving the buttons/changing words, NOT ON THE 2107. They're etched into the LCD, so forget about it. There are no extenders written for it that I've found, and you'll hear the same thing from the JP1 group. It's not real popular there, so no one ever bothered to write an extender.

The yahoo groups link found earlier in the thread http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/ in the files section. There is a program to use along with some how to's and spreadsheets used to program new codes. There is lots of info in the files area. There are a lot of the more popular remotes uploaded you just have to download the one for your particular controller and upload it to the remote. If there isn't one for your controller say the 2107 you can download one for say the 2104 and you may have to make some minor changes.

This jp1 is probobly for the more geeky people here. Meaning there is a learning curve is involved and some time if you have to program a whole controller. Then after you figure out what you can do you get ideas on other things to try. Like a vicious circle.

I got mine for just over $26 including tax tonight. Look for the coupon booklet, similar to what they offered last year, but this one relates to Nascar I believe.

LOOK for the coupon booklet!!!

How were you able to use the coupon? It says it's not good until november of 2003.

You second link is tweaked.

Let me know if you find anything useful for jp1. I haven't found anything really useful for it yet. I just got the 15-2107.

Can this remote control my xbox or my aiwa dvd player?

Ross, how does that remote work with your ReplayTV?

Currently I have 7 remotes laying around(TV, receiver, VCR, Xbox, cable box, ReplayTV(panasonic showstopper version), DVD player) maybe it is time to change all that.

Just came back from the local Radio Shack. The salesman said that they do not have any 15-2107s, but the 15-2117 is on sale (not advertised) for 39.99 through the end of April.
Any opinions if it's worth a $10 difference compared to 15-2116?

The coupon is definately YMMV. Depends on if the clerk notices. My salesman today just looked at the 11/30/03 date as the expiration date and put it right through. I was prepared to act like I didn't notice the dates if he noticed. But the coupon definately says good 11/1/03 to 11/30/03. It also says good for regularly priced remotes....so technically the clearanced (or sale priced) touch screen remote would be a no-no too.

I *think* the only difference between the two is that the 15-2117 comes with some sort of box w/ an antenna that makes it possible to use the remote from another room....through walls, doors, etc. The only use I could think for this would be if you were listening to music and didn't want to go into the next room to skip a track or something. Other than that I'm pretty sure the remotes are identical.

Ummm, but it does let you accept VCR on aux1 or CD or cable or TV or whatever the hell you want to put on aux 1!

Unfortunately I haven't had time to play with the remote yet and my ReplayTV isn't hooked up because I'll be slapping a Maxtor 120GB into it soon.

I'm sure that it works ok since the 2107 has a code for ReplayTV, should be the same or similiar for the 2116.

Ionizer that was simply an example. There are certain devices that can't be put on certain functions. Hows this, using jp1 you could put a tv code into the vcr function.

I think you mean to say you could be a "TV code into the VCR Codes"
For example say there were 3 vcr codes, 0000, 0001, 0002 and Two tv codes: 9999 and 9998
I think your saying you could edit a VCR code, say the first one, and make it have the TV codes for 9999

Im not sure what the need is for that, since everything can be learned.
If you didnt mean that, well then I stand by what I said initially. (I'm not denouncing the need for the jp1, just questioning what actual benefits are gained)

Thanks to AT. I finally bought a programmable remote controller to replace my old RadioShack that died from milk spill.

Question: I can only make the remote controller 'learn' about 15 commands and the memory is full. Is JP1 the only way to get more 'learn' function?

Thanks!

Regarding the 2116 push button remote:

1) How much memory does it have?
2) How many commands/macros/whatever can it hold?
3) Is there anyway to upgrade, flash or hack the memory, so you can have more?
