I think there were two problems that pushed the show away from the general public

1) Moderately complicated premise, featuring an atypical family unit. If you missed the first episodes, I could see someone blowing the show off entirely if they started watching mid-season or something, because it would be difficult to piece together what was going on in the series.

2) Comedy was too smart.

But yeah, a brilliant show.

You have to give them credit for at least keeping it on for 3 seasons. That's a long time for a show that was doing poorly in the ratings. At least it got a proper ending.

Haha, reminds me of the Save Our Bluths episode.

That few episode block is just FILLED with metaphors/stabs/jabs/etc that all make fun of how stupid FOX is.

i tried watching a few episodes when it was on tv and saw a funny bit here or there but some of it was just....weird and didnt make sense because i didnt get the references to earlier episode bits or info

i watched all of it in order and its easily my favorite sitcom. the narrator does quite a good bit of explaining, but without having seen it in order, it still came across as "wtf" sometimes.

i got it on dvd and let both my brothers watch it. they *loved* it.

The long version:

Ratings were low because it was a depth of comedy that your average viewer doesn't get. The average viewer wants mindless comedies like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Friends". Many of the jokes were running jokes from previous episodes, but there were still plenty of jokes that didn't require seeing previous episodes. The average viewer couldn't just "pick up" in the middle of the series despite the fact that the narration did a damn good job of giving enough background to make things bearable.

Coupled by the fact that the production cost was too close the revenue the show brought in more or less killed it. Advertisers don't care how awesome a show is, they only care how many people are seeing their ads.

In the end, the show was hoping to go to a premium channel. Most of them acted very uninterested, but I believe that Showtime actually made Hurwitz a deal, but after considering the big pain in the ass that it was to fight to keep it on, and they pretty much intentionally jumped the shark in the last few episodes, he just felt it wasn't worth moving to showtime and decided not to go on.

Trust me, I want the show to come back as much as anyone else, but it just WILL NOT happen. The opportunity was there, but turned down.

i had seen the show a few times on tv, just random episodes and had never really gotten into it... i just didn't find it funny

then my brother bought all 3 seasons on dvd, and i watched it and absolutely loved it... easily my favorite show

Arrested Developement was crap and so is Office. My opinion. Don't knock on me!
If you want a new show, check out Big Bang Theory...... Funny as hell! It's over too quick though!!!!!

I just think Bateman is/was the downfall/BORING fuck of the show! I tried to like it but it was just BORING as hell to me! Most of you call it smart maybe, but it was BORING SMART!
