Was in San Marcos up until 2 months ago. Living/working in Houston fulltime now

How did you find living in San Marcos? Was going to down-town Austin something you could do reasonably daily, weekly, monthly? It seems like a great place to raise a family (low cost of living near San Antonio) but still reasonably close to Austin.

I live in the far north suburbs (DFW), but I drop down to Austin for dinner and live music quite frequently.

I don't live in San Marcos, but my impression is you could do an Austin trip easily on weekends, but it's probably not something you'd do on weeknights. You would be going the opposite direction of most of the weekday traffic though.

I'd rather drive to San Marcos than drive Mopac/I-35 during rush hour.

I avoid 35 at every opportunity.

Mopac kind of depends on which part - if you're coming north in the afternoon, the southern end of mopac is usually fine up to 5th or so.

Do you have any preference?

There are good, local, non-chain restaurants along South Congress, South Lamar and South First. That is sort of the heart of Austin.

Polvo's is by far a favorite of mine. It is interior mexican food, as opposed to the Tex-Mex you will find most everywhere. The beef fajitas are out of this world and they make strong drinks. El Chile is right up there too, but it is more classy and doesn't have the same vibe.

If you are going to eat after 10PM, go to Magnolia Cafe on Congress. The one on Lake Austin Blvd sucks so avoid that one. You get to see every sort of Austinite under the sun at Magnolia, the food is plentiful and the atmosphere is pure Austin.

If the weather isn't too hot for you, or there is a mild evening, go try out Shady Grove but make sure you sit outside under the tree. Food isn't great but the environment is.

Best pizza is hands down Home Slice. Beware the wait for a table can get crazy (two hours at peak times) but you can always order to go next door or just grab a slice or two.

Chuy's (Tex-Mex) is worth trying, but they have expanded considerably and have lost some of that unique luster as a result. The one on Barton Springs Rd is the best location.

But I would also add that Torchy's Taco is pure heaven. And despite being a "chain" I still love Rudy's bbq.

I've been in Austin 5 years. Don't think I'll ever leave. And this is coming from a person living in the boring (Lake Austin/Lake Travis) part of town.

If I was not married and without kids, I'd live downtown. And probably never get married or have kids (barring "accidents" of course).

I have a friend that actually lives inside of the Austin city limits... friends that "live in Austin" (read north of Austin) say he doesn't live in the city because he is too far south.

It's where my wife and I could afford to buy when we got married.

Austin real estate is damn pricey (for TX).

Nah, Pflugerville has a different feel to it. The well established areas are kind ghetto and the new developments have no character.

I've lived in both and much prefer Wells Branch.

Plus we're not in any city limits so I can light fireworks in the front yard.

I wish I lived close to there, maybe in one of the new condos. A ten minute drive on Ben White gets me to most of those places which is good enough for me.

I should probably visit Austin sometime (Dallas).

If you have never been you definitely should visit. The vibe is totally different from Dallas, especially if you visit the right places.
