chimay's are alright.

I've had red/blue/white several times. The thick head that doesn't disappear is always the most interesting part. All are worth a try, but all are too expensive to make the regular weekly roundup..

---

On Thursdays my fav irish pub has been offering liter drafts for the price of a pint (5.50)! I've mostly been sitting on the patio and downing a couple great lakes - moondog esb's

I just finished a Hoppin Frog BORIS, I really enjoyed it. Also recently finished a Rogue Chocolate Stout the other day and it was.. meh for me. If I want a chocolate stout I'll stick to Young's Double Chocolate. Also finished a bottle of Chimay White the other day.. second in my Chimay list behind the red and in front of the blue. That about covers the things I've seen others mention in this thread that I've enjoyed lately.

Oh, to the PA guy complaining about not buying beer by the bottle, I'm a bit confused - don't you have any bottle shops near you? I almost always buy beer by the bottle.

Here's a list of what I had/have in my fridge for the last week:

Harviestoun Old Engine Oil - Fan-freakin'-tastic. Absolutely love it. A great old ale.

Harviestoun Ola Dubh 16 - This bad boy hit my to 5 instantly. A nice syrupy mouthfeel; pretty much old engine oil aged in single malt whiskey. You definitely get a little peaty/oakey taste fom the barrel and it finishes off the taste wonderfully.

Dogfish Head Festina Peche - I loved this when I had last year's batch but I'm not sure if there was something wrong with the bottle I got this year or if it's just this year's batch but I didn't care as much for it. From what I remembered about this one I was expecting a much more faint peach/citrus taste and the bottle I had was so tart I might have called it a geuze if I just tasted it without knowing what it was. Not bad, just not what I was expecting/wanted from this beer.

Cantillon Grand Cru - It's Cantillon, I mean, come on, right? Honestly, I didn't care for this Grand Cru as much I hoped I would. The mouthfeel was a bit too watery for me, there was ZERO head/carbination in this bottle (not that there should be much to it for this Grand Cru). The tartness/funk was about what I expected and it tasted pretty damn good - I just couldn't get paste the lackluster mouthfeel. I much prefer the Geuze, Iris, or Pepe (amazing).

Rogue Mocha Porter - I grab one of these from time to time because it's relatively cheap and I enjoy it. Nothing too too special, pretty typical mocha porter, but I like it a lot!

Voodoo Love Child - Nice color and look in the glass, great smell (I got a lot of passion fruit in the smell), but the taste disappointed me a bit (I didn't get much taste of passion fruit after getting excited for it from the smell). Definitely an enjoyable beer, I liked it, I just thought there were some differences between taste/smell that unsettled me a bit.

Anyone else got some suggestions? I drink anything! Although, I'm not a huge IPA fan.

I pass up the Chimay every time at Binny's. Not sure if I'm ready to try it yet or not.

Oh, stop passing it up! Chimay (any of the three) is just fantastic.

Welcome to the Great State of Pennsylvania. Here, you can only buy wine and hard liquor in State Stores. Beer, you can only buy by the quart or sixpack in bars or in some Deli's which have a license, or at "distributors" by the case.

Since most bars/delis stick to mainstream selections for take-out, we're pretty much reduced to having to buy the good beers only by the damn case. Can you imagine how expensive that can get?

Anyone in the miami, fl area know where to pick up a few different brands? Everywhere I go to is limited. Best case is I find 1 type I like at one store then another 20min drive to another place. Just not cool.

Sierra Nevada is not bad, and lots of restaurants up here are starting to carry it.

I live in PA, but luckily in a college town, we've got 4-5 bottle shops in town that sell numerous beers by the bottle (40's (of crap) and 750s of the better stuff) and six-pack, heck, my grocery store at home now has a pretty extensive bottle shop in it. Yeah, I dig what you're saying about liquor/wine. Where I really luck out is the fact that I work at a beer bar, so I can pretty much mix and match any bottles I want for take out. I also know of at least 1 or 2 stores at home where I can do the same. I guess you just have to know where to look?

Ah, good to know it wasn't just my bottle. Have you ever had it in previous years?

1 each of Dogfish Head's Palo Santo Marron, Midas' Touch, and 90 Minute IPA
1 Avery Mephistopheles imperial stout (the other two in this series, The Beast grand cru and Samael's brown ale were incredible)
1 Alesmith Decadence
1 Meantime IPA
4 Rasputin IRS
And a few bottles of homebrew smoked IPA

I recently opened the Stone 06 and 07 Vertical Epics that I'd been cellaring for a while. The 06 was what I'd expected from 2 years of aging - like its old self but oh so much more mellow and smooth. The 07 was a completely different story, though. A lot of the old flavor was there, but it had become intensely dry. Still great, just way different from what it was a year ago.
